Boat tips: winter care

Filed under: travel — Tags: boat, care, tips, winter — libertees @ 1:02 pm February 6, 2012

If you don’t winterise your boat properly, you’ll soon discover when spring arrives, your boat could have paid the price. So unless you have a specialist boatyard to do this for you, read our guide to keeping your boat in tip top condition over winter.

If you’re not planning on sailing over the winter months, take some time to put your boat to bed until the warmer weather returns.

You can’t expect to pack your boat away for months of harsh weather without problems. By spending an hour bedding it down properly, you can be sure that next it will be ready to go, without repairing the damage the winter has caused.

If you don’t winterise your boat properly, you’ll soon discover when spring arrives, your boat could have paid the price. So unless you have a specialist boatyard to do this for you, read our guide to keeping your boat in tip top condition over winter.

Engine Your engine is the most important and expensive item on your boat. Unfortunately, it is also the dirtiest job to do, so it’s far better to take care of your boat’s engine first. Dirty oil will stagnate throughout the winter, so you need to change the oil and filter.

You’ll also need to drain the engine’s cooling system by opening the coolant drain at the lowest point. If it’s a closed system, fill with antifreeze and water solution. If it’s an open system, flush it with clean water. If you have a carburettor, drain the gas and fill the tank with fuel stabiliser.

Toilets Ensure any tank used for toilet waste is pumped as dry as possible. Unless you can remove the tank easily, get a professional boatyard to carry this out for you. Always deodorise the tank. Marine shops offer specialised deodorisers made for this.

Clear the Boat Any items left on your boat over winter will inevitably collect moisture and mildew. Remove life jackets, cushions, sails and anything which could be affected and store in indoors.

Cupboards and hatches If you are storing your boat inside, keep all the hatches and storage cupboards open. If you’re boat is staying outside, you’ll need to ensure that all openings are firmly closed.

Cleaning your boat Give the boat a good wash before you tuck it up for the winter months – rinse rope and blocks in fresh water to rinse out salt particles, clean away any dirt and remove any loose ropes or sheets. It’s always best to remove the sails, and put them somewhere dry like a garage.

If you don’t plan to sail over the winter, it’s the perfect opportunity start on those repairs you’ve been putting off, and get ready for 2010.

I Love Sightseeing Tours of Italy – Latium Winter Attractions and Events

Filed under: travel — Tags: attractions, events, italy, latium, love, sightseeing, tours, winter — libertees @ 1:03 pm January 6, 2012

Latium is on the Tyrrhenian coast of central Italy. Its capital is Rome, the capital of Italy, and, and, and. I said it before, I’ll say it again. Or more precisely, I quoted before, and I’ll quote again (because I did not coin this phrase) Roma, non basta una vita. Rome, one lifetime is not enough. I just read that you can expect four hours of sunshine a day in the Roman winter. Maybe. But you’re in Rome. Romaeuropa Festival is Rome’s big festival of theater, music, and dance held in venues throughout Rome for more than a month starting in early November. This is Italy’s top contemporary art festival, and one of the major European art festivals. It includes dozens and dozens of shows, many of which are national premieres.

The Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception on December 8 is an Italian national holiday. There are celebrations throughout Italy and churches hold special masses. You’ll find parades, feasts, and music here, there, and almost everywhere. Rome celebrates with floral wreaths and a ceremony at the Spanish Steps presided over by the Pope. Although government offices and banks are closed, many stores stay open for holiday shopping.

Latium is home to a large number and wide variety of Living Nativity Scenes. The town of Greccio presents an unusual one: the Re-enactment Of St. Francis Building The First Nativity Scene (Christmas Eve). St. Francis of Assisi is said to have started things off by building a straw nativity scene in a Greccio cave in 1223. Some of the largest and most elaborate Roman Nativity Scenes are found in Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Euclide, Santa Maria in Trastevere, Santa Maria d’Aracoeli on the Capitoline Hill, and in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican City. You may choose to attend the midnight mass on Christmas Eve followed by the Pope’s blessing on Christmas Day. The Church of Saints Cosma e Damiano, by the main entrance to the Roman Forum, displays a large nativity scene from Naples all year round. Other towns that host nativity scenes include Bassano, Vetralla, and Chia whose offering on December 26 includes more than 500 participants.

Rome’s traditional New Year’s Eve celebrations are centered in Piazza del Popolo (Square of the People). Huge crowds celebrate with rock and classical music, dancing, and fireworks. The celebration continues on New Year’s Day with festivities for the children. Or you may prefer a classical music concert outdoors on the square in front of the Quirinale off Via Nazionale around 11:00 followed by fireworks at midnight.

In Vatican City, following another Epiphany (January 6) tradition, hundreds of people dressed in medieval costumes promenade along the wide avenue that leads up to the Vatican, carrying symbolic gifts for the Pope. The Pope pronounces a morning mass in St Peter’s Basilica to commemorate the Wise Men visit bearing gifts for Jesus. The town of Velletri celebrates the Festival of St. Anthony Historical Parade and Jousting Tournament in January. At the beginning of February, the hilltop town of Fiuggi honors Saint Biagio by bringing tree trunks in from the forest and lighting them in the main square. That seems to be it for Latium February festivals, with the exception of Carnivale to be covered in another article. And yet, in spite of the weather which may not be the best, I somehow think that you can manage to enjoy yourself in Rome in February.

Reasons To Go On Cheap Cruise This Winter

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: cheap, cruise, reasons, winter — libertees @ 1:02 pm December 5, 2011

Do we ask ourselves how often we take time off for a vacation? Can you be boastful about it when answering this question -When was the last time you had a vacation? Or rather went on a cruise?

In approximately 45 days from today that I am writing this article we will be celebrating Christmas. For many of us with office jobs the year has been somewhat hectic. The constant talk of economic global recession at the start of this year gave us a reason to work extra hours. If for any reason you don’t seem to understand what I am talking then to make it clear to you am talking about the PP (Private Practice) we involve ourselves in after office hours.

Taking time off to enjoy ourselves on vacation can help a great deal in overcoming office stress and our hectic lifestyles. Unfortunately, not many would agree with me-few months ago I wouldn’t agree either. In fact, I believed it was a waste of time and money.

But recently I went on a vacation cruise and I bet you would not believe what I find out. After I came back, I now see things on a different angle that cruises not only take off our minds from stress it also give us the opportunity to visit different places around the world. Remember what they say about excursion in high school.

Interestingly, many are afraid of going on a cruise partly because of the cost.

But I, for one happen to be an average salary earner-maybe that contributed to my not liking to go on a cruise before now. So I went for cheap cruises. And what I discovered was very interesting. As much as many of the cruise lines are expensive there are also some cheap ones.  Some of those I find that are cheap is highlighted below.

Reasons To Go On Cheap Cruise This Winter -Part 2(Concluding Part)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: cheap, cruise, part, reasons, winter — libertees @ 1:04 am

Norwegian Cruise Line: The good thing about this is that you get a freestyle cruising experience. This means that you can wear anything you like. The line recently came up with seven decks of freestyle family fun which include a climbing wall experience, bowling lanes with six in two venues, and a sports deck facility for athletes among many other fun activities for you and the family.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises: This is fine for those that want to be entertained. They will get the chance to be entertained by two star performers.  They will perform at “Dinner and Show” entertainment for guests during the upcoming winter period. Will it not be good to be entertained while cruising? I can bet you will love it.

Oceania Cruises: For those that really love cruising, this package will open up opportunities to travel to places like Russia, Greece, Syria, Iceland, Turkey along with chic and tony yacht harbors in France, Italy and Spain. And remember all these will be available for your whole family.

Disney Cruises: This is by far the oldest of all cruise lines. If you want to do things the old way then you might want to give Disney cruise a look. It doesn’t offer any casino facility but the atmosphere offered is the best around. This is perfect for families that want elegance onboard with Disney characters that will make the cruise even more charming. It has the most luxurious interiors and has tons of up to date onboard amenities to offer. You won’t regret the experience ever.

In conclusion, I will advice that in other save money is it better to book tickets on off-seasons. They will be reasonably priced during off-seasons so take the chance.

Since I enjoyed mine it’s certain you will enjoy yours. Have while cruising.

.Beautiful city of Barcelona, capital of Catalonia (a Spain’s province), is situated on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea and bordered at either end by 2 river deltas. Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain after its capital city Madrid. Barcelona has a population of 1.5 million, over 4 million including suburbs. The varied, eventful history of the city dates back 4,000 years to the first settlements by ancient farmers. Later it became a Roman colony, the Visigoth’s capital city, and then it came under Moorish rule. It went through sieges, destructions and occupations, finally to become an autonomous democracy 1975. The city has always played an important role in political and cultural life of Spain and it is well reflected in the variety and quality of historical buildings, museums, many other tourist attractions. Today Barcelona is one of the most diverse European cities with unique culture and rich traditions. You can find here a formidable balance of the traditional things and the avant-garde. A cosmopolitan metropolis, Barcelona affords visitors a warm and sincere welcome, being acknowledged worldwide as one of the best tourist-friendly cities in Europe. Barcelona’s organization of the 1992 Olympics provided regeneration of this dynamic city, gave a fresh start to its infrastructure development. WHAT TO SEE AND WHERE: POINTS OF INTEREST – La Ramble is a tree-lined pedestrian boulevard packed with buckers, living statues, mimes and itinerant salespeople selling everything from lottery tickets to jeweler. Pavement cafes and stands selling craftwork, street performers surrounded by curious onlookers, a noisy bird market, Palau de la Virreina, a grand 18th-century rococo mansion, the Gran Teeter del Liceu, the famous 19th-century opera house- these are all colorful parts of La Rambla’s mosaic. La Rambla ends at the lofty Monument a Colom (Monument to Columbus) and the harbour. Barri Gotic – also known as Gothic Quarter, it is the old part of the city. Picasso lived and worked in Barri Gotic from 1895 to 1904 and Joan Miro was born and lived here during his youth. Gothic Quarter is situated on the right hand side of the La Rambla, it contains a concentration of medieval tall Gothic buildings (14-15th century) on narrow cobbled streets and now is home to much of the city’s nightlife. La Sagrada Familia – La Sagrada Familia is one of the most famous and magnificent among Barcelona’s landmarks. The life’s work of Barcelona’s famous architect, Antoni Gaudi, the magnificent spires of the unfinished cathedral imprint themselves boldly against the sky with swelling outlines inspired by the holy mountain Montserrat. Above each facade there are four towers, 12 in total, which are dedicated to the Apostles. The tower in the center, the tallest of all at 170 m., is dedicated to Jesus Christ. Around these there are the towers of the four Evangelists, and the tower over the apse is dedicated to the Virgin. They are encrusted with a tangle of sculptures that seem to breathe life into the stone. Gaudi died in 1926 before his masterwork was completed, and since then, controversy has continually dogged the building program. Nevertheless, the southwestern (Passion) facade, is almost done, and the nave, begun in 1978, is progressing. La Pedrera – Casa Mila (Mila House) is an apartment building, the last example of Gaudi’s civil architecture. It is one of his finest and most ambitious creations, extraordinarily innovative in its functional, constructive, and ornamental aspects. Visitors can tour the building and go up to the roof, where they can see spectacular views of Barcelona. One floor below the roof is a modest museum dedicated to Gaudi’s work. Montjuic – the largest open space in the city, its main attractions are the Olympic installations, the Spanish Village and the hilltop fortress. Montjuic, the hill overlooking the city centre from the southwest, is home to some fine art galleries, leisure attractions, soothing parks and the main group of 1992 Olympic sites. Montjuic is covered in ornamental gardens with water features and is the most popular destination in Barcelona on Sundays. Tibidabo – is the highest hill in the wooded range that forms the backdrop to Barcelona. It has amazing views of the whole of Barcelona, a stunning cathedral, and a family fun park Parc d’Atraccions with old-style rides offering breathtaking views. A glass lift at the park goes 115m (383 ft) up to a visitors’ observation area at Torre de Collserola telecommunications tower. Modernisme – spectacular modernista architectural creations dotted around the city by famous Antoni Gaudi and his contemporaries. Camp Nou – home of F.C. Barcelona, one of Europe’s leading soccer teams, with capacity of almost 100,000 spectators. The Seu Cathedral – Built in medieval times on the site of a Roman temple, La Seu is one of the great Gothic buildings in Spain. Parc de la Ciutadella – Barcelona’s favorite park and a Sunday afternoon rendezvous for families, friends and ducks The Sardana – traditional Catalan dance, performed outside the cathedral and at national festivals, with everyone encouraged to join in.

MUSEUMS – The Barbier-Mueller Museum of Pre-Columbian Art -the only museum in Europe devoted exclusively to Pre-Columbian cultures. Housed in a gothic palace, its collection is one of the finest of its kind and gives visitors an insight into the rich world of the earliest cultures on the American continent. This tiny museum contains one hundred pieces, including wood and stone sculptures, ceramics, tapestries, jade, often found in international exhibitions and prestige publications. The exhibits represented the Olmec, Maya, Aztec, Chavin, Mochica and Inca civilisations. Palau de la Musica Catalana – one of the world’s most extraordinary music halls, it is a Barcelona landmark. From its polychrome ceramic ticket windows on the Carrer de Sant Pere Mes Alt side to its overhead busts of Palestrina, Bach, Beethoven, and Wagner, the Palau is the flagship of Barcelona’s Moderniste architecture. Museu Picasso – is Barcelona’s most visited museum. 3,500 exhibits make up the permanent collection. Picasso spent several years (1901-06) in Barcelona, and this collection, is particularly strong on his early work. Displays include childhood sketches, pictures from the beautiful Rose and Blue periods, and the famous 1950s Cubist variations on Velazquez’s Las Meninas (Ladies-in-Waiting). Gaudi Casa-Museu – Gaudi lived in this pink, Alice-in-Wonderland house from 1906 to 1926, which now houses a museum of Gaudi-designed furniture, decorations, drawings, and portraits and busts of the architect. Fundacio Miro – it was a gift from the famous artist Joan Miro to his native city. The museum opened in 1975, and now it is one of Barcelona’s most exciting showcases of contemporary art.

BEACHES – One of Barcelona’s greatest draws is undeniably its beautiful beaches. Beside world-famous Costa Brava and Costa Dorada which are within 1-hr drive time from Barcelona, there are also several nice beaches over 4 km long within the city boundaries, we will list just several of them here: Nova Icaria- Closest to the Olympic marina, always crowded, this wide swathe of rough golden sand is great for food goers. There are three perfect beach bars and two very popular restaurants on the promenade (Mango and Chiringuito de Moncho) and countless bars and restaurants are just a short stroll away. Bogatell- This beach is twice the length of adjoining Nova Icaria and fringed by a stretch of stone walkway perfect for jogging, roller blading and cycling. Three large informal restaurants on the promenade. Mar Bella (Metro Ciutadella Vila Olimpica, plus 20-minute walk)- Barcelona’s only naturist beach close to a peaceful park – good for a picnic or siesta under the trees. Barceloneta- wide and long, a traditional and popular stretch with locals, crowded, noisy and very jolly.

WHEN TO GO, WEATHER: The best times to visit Barcelona are late spring and early autumn, when the weather is still comfortably warm, around 21-25°C. Summers are usually hot and humid, with temperatures averaging +30 (+ 86 Fahrenheit). Especially avoid the “dead” month of August, when many shops, bars and restaurants close for the month as many local inhabitants head out of the city. Winters are cool with average daytime temperatures around +12 C (+59 Fahrenheit), occasionally rainy.

GETTING THERE AND AROUND: By a direct flight to Barcelona, or through Madrid or via another large European city from almost any major airports in the world. The highest fares are from May to September, the lowest in March-April, October-November and December to February (excluding Christmas and New Year when prices are hiked up). Note also that flying on weekends may increase your ticket cost. If traveling to Barcelona from within Europe you can also chose train, bus or car, though these take much longer than a plane and often work out no cheaper. Many Mediterranean cruises include Barcelona as a port of call.

ACCOMODATIONS: We can offer you a range of choices. You can choose vacation rentals in Barcelona starting from $ 125 USD for a double room in a 4-star apartment hotel. Or you can opt for hotels from $ 65 USD for a double room in a 3-star hotel. Accomodation prices do not change much throughout the year due to the steady all-season flow of visitors to this extremely popular tourist city and surrounding resorts.

DINING: Besides restaurants you can eat at bars where you would have a succession of tapas (small snacks- three or four chunks of fish, meat or vegetables, or salad, which traditionally used to be served up free with a drink) or raciones (larger ones). The bar option can be a lot more interesting, allowing you to do the rounds and sample local specialities. Generally, the average cost for a meal consisting of two dishes and dessert would come to about 25 Euros. Travellers on an extremely limited budget can do well for themselves by using the excellent markets, bakeries and delis and filling up on sandwiches and snacks. Decent restaurants and cafes are easily found all over the city, though you’ll probably do most of your eating where you do most of your sightseeing, in the old town, particularly around La Rambla and in the Barri Gotic. Look for the best and most authentic seafood restaurants in Barceloneta, a seaside neighbourhood. Gothic Quarter neighbourhood is home to some of the oldest and most traditional restaurants in the city. Gracia is a very popular area among young people during the weekend, it leads the way in terms of exotic restaurants (Lebanese, Egyptian, Thai etc.).

TRANSPORT: Barcelona has excellent transport system comprising the metro (subway), buses, trains and a network of funiculars and cable cars. You can find a link to transport maps at the end of our guide. On all the city’s public transport you can buy a single ticket every time you ride, but even over only a couple of days it’s cheaper to buy a targeta – a discount ticket strip. The T-10 targeta is valid for ten separate journeys on the metro, buses and trains. These tickets can be used by more than one person at a time. The metro is the quickest way of getting around Barcelona. For black-and-yellow taxis there is a minimum charge of $ 2 euro. You’ll obviously have a great deal more freedom if you rent a car . Major roads throughout the city are generally good, and traffic is generally well behaved, though Spain does have one of the highest incidences of traffic accidents in Europe. It also has some of the lowest fuel prices on the continent.

SHOPPING: Barcelona, one of the most stylish cities in Europe offers great shopping, from designer clothes and accessories to household items. You will find the city to be quite cheap for a lot of items, especially if you coincide with the annual sales ( rebaixes in Spanish) lasting from mid-January until the end of February, and throughout July and August. The best shopping areas in Barcelona are the old streets off the upper part of the Ramblas. Souvenirs include ceramics, which are widely sold in the streets around the cathedral; leather goods; city’s delicatessens, particularly cooked Catalan meats and sausages; a porron (the long-spouted glass drinking jar); CDs and tapes of Catalan rock and pop, sardana music, Spanish rock or flamenco. If you’re looking for original gift ideas, some of the best hunting can be found in the shops of any of the city’s museums, where you’ll find reasonably priced and unique examples of Catalan disseny (graphic), and other original items ranging from postcards to replica works of art. We wish you a nice and safe trip!

Cruise vacations are one of the most exciting and fun vacations you and your family will ever have. Planning your cruise vacation is the key to making the most of the cruise experience.

Cruise ships are floating hotels that sail through ocean while you enjoy all the hotel’s amenities provided. They have casinos, swimming pools, theaters, restaurants, shopping centers or boutiques, spas, gyms and more.

As great as taking a vacation on cruise ships may seem, you still need to know how to plan a cruise ship vacation properly so you have the perfect cruise experience. You need to know about the different types of packages the cruise lines offer.

When planning a cruise ship vacation you need to know how to choose one that will meet your expectation or tailor to your needs. Here are some guidelines that you can follow to plan your cruise travel and enjoy the perfect cruise experience:

Think of who you want to take with you on your cruise vacation. There are many different packages offered by cruise lines. There are packages for the whole family and there are packages for single travelers.

Will you be taking the cruise vacation with children? Maybe you will take your significant other for a romantic getaway. There are cruise ships that are tailored for children and there are cruise lines that cater to single cruisers and honeymooners. There are even some ships that offer wedding services. What could be better than to get married on the ship and have your honeymoon built in?

Decide how long you want to cruise. If you just want to try it out, opt for a three day cruise. Normally, cruises start at three nights and can go anywhere from seven to fourteen days. But there are also world cruises that can last as long as three months. My advice is if you are going to cruise in Europe you should pick a fourteen day cruise because of the expense and long plane rides to get to your port of embarkation. If you live near a port and you just want to take a long weekend choose of three or four day cruise. Decide what cruise travel is best for you.

Choose the perfect destination for you and your family. Alaska is beautiful but can only be cruised in the summer months. If you live in the colder climes you may want to take a mid winter cruise to the Caribbean or even South America. If you want your cruise travel to be in the Caribbean and you want to spend two weeks on your cruise vacation, choose a line that alternates between the Eastern and Western Caribbean. This cruise vacation takes you to many different islands.

The cruise lines have a variety of destinations to choose from. Visit your cruise travel agent to go over the different itineraries or check out the individual websites of the cruise lines.

Consider the port of departure. Since 9/11 cruises have been emphasizing home port cruising. Now there are many cruises that depart from Bayonne, New Jersey, Galveston, Texas, or Seattle, Washington, not just Miami and Fort Lauderdale.. Depart from the one closest to you and you will save money on expensive airfare.

Speak to a knowledgeable cruise travel agent. Make sure they have personally sailed on many different cruise ships so they can give you an honest opinion on what each cruise line has to offer and which would give you the perfect cruise experience.
A cruise travel agent will also be able to supply you with cruise tips. Scour the cruise reviews for additional cruise tips.

Large cruise lines have a variety of activities and facilities that you can use on the ship. If you like to gamble then choosing a cruise ship with casinos is probably right for you. Or if you are taking your kids with you, a cruise ship that offers activities and facilities for children would be the best choice for your cruise travel. For instance, Disney is, of course, geared toward children but they do not have casinos. So if you are taking the family but you want to gamble steer away from Disney and choose one of the other major cruise lines. Almost all of them have children’s programs. If you don’t want to be on a ship with children sail on one of the fancier lines that don’t cater to children. Here, again, it pays to read as many cruise reviews as you can to pick up additional cruise tips.

Cruise vacations do not necessarily mean that you have to spend all your vacation time onboard. All the cruise ships offer land and shore excursions. The cruise lines offer pre and post cruise land vacations usually for two or three days.

Land excursions are a great way to explore different cultures and destinations when taking a cruise vacation. You can choose from many activities once you reach a port of call. You can go kayaking, scuba diving or go shopping in the markets of the ports of call.

Following these guidelines will give you some ideas on planning your cruise vacation properly. Proper planning will give you a more exciting cruise experience.

Happy Cruising!

Choosing a Cruise Deal This Winter

Filed under: cruise — Tags: choosing, cruise, deal, winter — libertees @ 4:01 pm May 3, 2010

It’s a good time to snap up discounted cruise deals this winter as the recession lingers on and cruise lines are vying with each other for your custom.

However, cruise deals this winter are not likely to be as good as they were last year when travellers were offered such joys as free shore trips and onboard credits. But it’s still a good time for bargain cruise deals!

When you are in the process of choosing the best cruise deal for you this winter you will certainly want some expert advice, as this can make all the difference between just taking a cruise and actually delighting in the experience. You will be amazed when you land the cruise deal of your dreams so now it is essential to get it all right so that you have the time of your life on your cruise.

Do check out the types of restaurants on board and that they provide the kind of food you prefer as types of cuisine do vary between the different cruise lines. For example, if you have a special diet don’t forget to inform the cruise line on booking your cruise deal so they can meet with your request.

Cruise ships vary in the type of entertainment they provide and the larger the cruise ship the wider the choice will be for you, so check out what is available. If there is an activity you especially enjoy such as bridge or bingo, don’t forget to consult your cruise advisor when looking for special cruise deals.

Landing the cruise deal of your dreams this winter may give you a taste for another cruise next year. So when you book, do enquire if your cruise line has a loyalty scheme as this may mean another good cruise deal next year.

How to Improve Your Catch Rate when Winter Fishing

Filed under: cruise — Tags: catch, fishing, improve, rate, winter — libertees @ 9:56 am January 25, 2010

It is true to say that a sudden fall in temperature puts nearly all fish off their feeding. Thus when winter approaches many anglers put their rods away until the warmer months return. But most fish will start feeding again after the temperature has fallen, but far less freely than before.

Freshwater usually does not fall any where near freezing point except for the cooler upper layers where ice can often form. The critical temperature is around 39 degrees Fahrenheit or roughly 4 degrees Centigrade beneath which you will be unlikely to make a good catch as the fish will be in a state of torpor. Most of the time the water temperature will be above this and cold weather fishing can be very productive.

You should be ready to change your expectations. If you catch a handful of fish when the water is cooler this represents as successful a visit as a bag full in the summer months. When you fully accept that it is more difficult to catch when the water is colder in comparison to when it is warm you are able to enjoy some great sport.

If it is cold enough to freeze the surface of a flowing river it is easy to find a spot to fish. Areas free of ice will dictate where you fish as these will be warmer at the surface than anywhere else. You should use a fixed ledger rather than a moving bait and let the fish slowly find your offerings. Ground bait lightly as the fish will only eat sparingly and experiment with some highly flavored treats for the fish. A piece of cheese can work wonders when it is cold for the likes of roach and chub.

Because the fish only bite shyly, feeling for the takes with your fingers on the line may be your first thought. You may find it is too cold to take your gloves off to do this. Using a sensitive quill or stick float over-fished statically on the bottom can work well. If you move the bait gently a few inches every so often you will cover more ground and potentially induce a take.

You must find deeper spots in still waters that will hold warmer water than in the shallows. This might mean that you have to cast further than you would like in conditions where the fish are rather sluggish. Bread flake or crust molded onto the hook, perhaps with a smelly attractant added, works better than maggots when it is cold. If you can find very deep water say over 20 feet this will likely to be much warmer owing to the temperature gradient in such waters and the fish may be feeding very freely here. In this case large juicy worms can be a good choice where perch inhabit the water.

In conclusion, whereas the summer angler hates bright sunlight which can put fish off their feeding, the reverse applies in the colder months. On a bright sunny winter’s day the water can warm up slightly by the afternoon enough to stimulate the fish’s renewed feeding activity. It certainly will lift the angler’s spirits in the winter season!

Why Not? Winter Niagara Falls Hotel Packages

Filed under: cruise — Tags: falls, hotel, niagara, not, packages, why, winter — libertees @ 8:52 pm January 11, 2010

As a Niagara Falls resident for over 15 years, I’ve had the best moments at Niagara Falls through the fall & winter months.  There are many phenomenal aspects that you would never experience if you were to travel through the summer. Not on that; Niagara Falls hotel packages offer outstanding deals in order to fill their vacant rooms.  You’ll have pick of the litter, as you explore everything that Niagara Falls has to offer.

The words ‘Winter Wonderland’ only come to mind when I think of the area by the Horseshoe Falls through the colder months. You see, the mist that is generated by the enormous amount of falling water continually shift with the winds, causing ice to form on just about everything. Light stands to guard rails are all covered with an enormous thick shield of ice. Fallen giant Icicles from dripping water are sometime too large to even pick up! Everything and I mean everything is covered in this majestically icy glazed coating, sparkling with the sunlight.  Speaking of ice, don’t forget to go ice skating overlooking the falls. Recently, Niagara Parks installed ‘Rink on the Brink’ which is a public skating area just a stone’s throw away from the Horseshoe Falls.  Skate Rentals are available with an all day pass for just $8.00CDN.

As an addition to the spectacular winter scenery, each year the Niagara Parks Commission puts up their Festival of Lights. With over 125 oversized animated lighting displays, and 3 million tree and ground lights they light up the wintery nights. There’s nothing quite like taking a stroll with a hot drink through the snow covered parks surrounded by beautiful lights.  Drive around Dufferin Island for a fun family lighting display that your entire family will enjoy. On top of it all, there is no charge, however donations are appreciated.

A smart thing to realize is Niagara Falls hotels make their big money through the summer months. During the winter, they just try to keep their heads above the water. Pricing for Niagara Falls hotel packages, attractions, and extras usually drop substantially.  Moreover, if you visit the homepage of your Hotel of choice, you’ll find spectacular winter specials posted from time to time. Not only do you get your accommodations, but food certificates, inclusive breakfast, and in some cases attraction passes all at discount pricing.

Weather is not usually that big of an issue. In fact over the last 3-5 years we’ve had relatively mild winters. What most people don’t realize, is that the Niagara Regions average (daytime) winter temperature ranges from +2 degrees to -1 degree Celsius (or 36° to 30° degrees Fahrenheit) – hardly unbearable.  Snowfalls are moderate, and snowstorms are infrequent.  So, as long as you dress appropriately the weather shouldn’t scare you away. The best part is, most of the attractions are indoors so you’ll enjoy them just the same, just without the large volume of people.   In November, my wife and I were enjoying the Hilton Fallsview Hotels mammoth indoor swimming pool, giant 3 story waterslide, saunas and more; ALONE!  This was late fall, and it wasn’t even cold yet!  Bear in mind, we do get colder spells when temperatures can drop substantially, especially through January and February, so be prepared.

Don’t let the winter get you down. Price savings combined with exciting attractions and fantastic accommodations are sure to combine to create an outstanding time away, Enjoy a weekend getaway, family retreat, or romantic adventure with the beauty and solitude of Niagara Falls Hotel Packages.
