The airport is a replica of the Hilo airport, in that it is simple, inviting, beautiful and efficient. Visitors will be ushered quickly through the formalities and they will find themselves on their way out of the airport in a short time. However, getting around Lihue is another story.
There are limited options before you in Lihue. You can get around using public and private transportation. Public transportation is sadly unequal to the task of providing tourists with the kind of service they want. The bus route has a bus plying every one hour from 8 am to 3.40 pm. This service is open from Monday through Friday. So, what do you do if you want to travel during the weekend?
You could say that’s what taxis are for. Taxis and shuttle service are modes of private transportation in Lihue. However, taxi services are very expensive although they are very comfortable. This makes taxis unviable for visitors who are traveling on a budget. Shuttles are available only at certain times and between fixed destinations.
Another major drawback with the public transportation at Lihue is traffic. Much of Kauai has a single road winding through the island. The road is a single lane road in both directions. Therefore, traveling by bus on a congested road is definitely not your idea of the ideal vacation.
Therefore, renting a vehicle seems to be the best way of getting around in Lihue. Rental cars are available in huge numbers and visitors cannot complain of a lack of choice. However, if you put off your reservation for the last minute, you might be in for some serious heartache. For one thing, renting a vehicle at the airport is tedious. So, be prepared for a long wait. Also, the rental car terminal requires a short bus ride from the airport to the travel desk. That is the last thing you want to do when you arrived tired and achy from your trip.
