“Ready?” she asked, her grayish-brown eyes smiling teasingly at him.
“Yeah,” he laughed, planting a kiss on her lips.
“Can’t wait…” she said flirtatiously.
Nicole’s best friend Jennifer Douglas approached them. She was a short girl with dirty-blond hair and brown eyes. Carter didn’t even talk to her until he started dating Nicole. A lot of her friends were coming up to him during passing periods and conversing with him.
“Hey, Carter!” she beamed. “What’s up?”
“Nothing.” he said. “I’m waiting for Spring Break to come.”
“Me too.” she agreed. “I’m going to Cali with my girls.”
“I’m going to Barbados with the rest. We always go there on Spring Break.”
For two years, Holly’s mother paid for the group to go to Barbados. Carter remembered the last time they went to Barbados for Spring Break. It involved Andy Simms and ten shots of tequila.
“I wish I can go.” Jennifer frowned. “But I’ll have fun in Cali.”
“I’m sure you will.” he said.
Nicole tapped him on the shoulders. “Am I going?”
“Well, of course.” he smiled. “We wouldn’t go without you.”
Just then Holly turned around to face them. “Oh, man! We kind of already had this planned since the beginning of the school year. I have to ask my mom if you can come. She kind of has this weird thing about not bringing over ten people with us.”
“Oh,” Nicole said, looking down at the floor. “Okay.”
“Hey, I didn’t say she’ll say no.” Holly encouraged, putting an arm on her shoulder. “It’s just that I’m not sure. I’m sure she’ll say yes.”
Nicole’s face lit up. “I hope so. I always wanted to go to the Caribbeans!”
“Well, Nicki.” Carter said. “Your wish might just come true.”
He secretly hoped that Nicole would get to go with them. He didn’t want to spend his Spring Break alone. Nicole would be a perfect edition for their vacation.
“Who’s all going?” Nicole asked.
“The usual people.” Damien answered. “Carter, Holly, me, Aaron, Andy, Maris, Vanny, Elisha, Mark, and Reese.”
“Come again?” Carter asked, raising his eyebrows at him.
Damien started to repeat the count, but Carter stopped him. “No, I mean about the ‘Vanny’ part.”
“She’s going.” Holly said tonelessly.
“Why?!” Nicole exclaimed, but then caught herself. “I mean, why? I thought you guys hated her.”
“We don’t hate anyone.” Holly said matter-of-factly. “She’s our friend. So she’s going.”
“She’s not one of the usual people who goes with us on Spring Break.” Carter protested. “She just moved her in August.”
“We don’t care.” Damien said. “She’s going.”
Carter growled. Savannah was just going to cause drama. There was no way they could get her and Nicole in the same room together. Savannah would more than likely kill her.
Just then Aaron Floyd came over. His dark-hair was curly and he had amber brown eyes. His Paramount Football hoodie was tied around his waist.
“What’s up?” he asked glibly.
“Their inviting Savannah for our Spring Break vacation.” Carter moaned. “Besides Holly, that’s not ten people; it’s eleven!”
“So?” Aaron said, shrugging his shoulders. “It’ll be fun.”
“No, it won’t.” Carter sighed. “She’s a bitch.”
“Since when?” Holly asked angrily. “And I prefer it if you didn’t call her a bitch.”
“Sorry,” Carter said, exasperated. “I’m just not gonna spend my vacation with her.”
“You don’t have to.” Nicole said, putting an arm around him. “You can spend it with me.”
That made Carter feel a whole lot better. Maybe he would be able to ignore Savannah. There was at least Nicole who would keep him company. And if Savannah tried to start something, they would just simply ignore it.
“We gotta go.” Holly said. “We have a minute left.”
“Crap!” Damien exclaimed. “Let’s go!”
They all ran down the hallway, smashing into a few unlucky people. Finally they made it out the door and to the buses. The weather wasn’t as cold as it was before. It was early March and there were only flurries of snow in the sky. Carter couldn’t wait for Spring to come.

WHEN TO GO, WEATHER: The best times to visit Barcelona are late spring and early autumn, when the weather is still comfortably warm, around 21-25°C. Summers are usually hot and humid, with temperatures averaging +30 (+ 86 Fahrenheit). Especially avoid the “dead” month of August, when many shops, bars and restaurants close for the month as many local inhabitants head out of the city. Winters are cool with average daytime temperatures around +12 C (+59 Fahrenheit), occasionally rainy.

GETTING THERE AND AROUND: By a direct flight to Barcelona, or through Madrid or via another large European city from almost any major airports in the world. The highest fares are from May to September, the lowest in March-April, October-November and December to February (excluding Christmas and New Year when prices are hiked up). Note also that flying on weekends may increase your ticket cost. If traveling to Barcelona from within Europe you can also chose train, bus or car, though these take much longer than a plane and often work out no cheaper.
