Eco Friendly Holidays In Lanzarote

Filed under: cruise — Tags: eco, friendly, holidays, lanzarote — libertees @ 10:01 pm January 19, 2010

The ongoing (if unproven according to some experts) effects of global warming are causing an ever increasing number of tourists and holidaymakers to re-assess there choice of holiday destination. Coupled with the current economic squeeze (which will be here for some time to come) choosing a holiday destination closer to home can be both cheaper on the pocket and at the same time be more environmentally friendly.

As a major holiday destination the island of Lanzarote (which is in the Canarian archipelago) quite possibly at first glance may not appear to have altogether the best of green credentials, however, there are a number of ways in which it does well to beat other destinations hands down for holidaymakers looking to reduce their carbon footprint and remain environmentally conscious.

Air travel is said to be a major contributor to green house gases so to begin with the fact that the islands location is only four hours flight from the United Kingdom (and a little more for mainland Europe) means that it is half the distance, and therefore half the fuel consumption, of the Caribbean. That doesn’t mean you have to compromise on the weather though, as Lanzarote can vie with tropical islands for all year round good weather. With an average of only twenty days rainfall per annum there is also no monsoon season to deal with, and you can enjoy day time temperatures of approximately 20º Celsius even in the mid winter months.

Across the island many of the self catering apartments and holiday villas on Lanzarote already use eco-friendly solar panels to produce heated water for their swimming pools as opposed to electrical heating, whilst larger consumers of water, which tend to be the leisure attractions such as the island’s two golf courses, use recycled liquid to ensure that demand on the desalination system is minimised wherever possible. Alternative energy sources such as wind power are also popular, with commercially several large turbines generating a sizeable proportion of the island’s electricity requirements and this is also reflected in the smaller turbines used by individual premises.

But it isn’t simply businesses and accommodation on Lanzarote that adopt the green ethos and operate on a more eco-friendly basis. Eco friendly development has been in place for many years on the island and even the tourist attractions have been both planned and developed to work as much in harmony with their surroundings as is reasonably possible. This low impact ethos was the result of one man’s visions, and as such his creative intervention in the island’s development came just at the right moment.

The internationally renowned architect and artist, César Manrique, was actually born on Lanzarote and returned to his home after a spell in New York in the late 1960′s. His unique talents and his blend of architecture with art were employed in the creation of the seven centres of art and culture that help to provide visitors with an insight into the lives of past and present residents. These centres have been devised to be both visually appealing and environmentally sensitive so if you are visiting Lanzarote make some time to visit some of these modern but harmonious additions to the surrounding landscape.

However, Manrique’s creations were only one side of this geniuses talents, he was also well ahead of the crowd and was instinctively tuned and had a perceptive vision of how tourism could if remaining unchecked would spoil the natural beauty of the island. Especially if unrestricted development was allowed to get a foothold. So he worked alongside the government of Lanzarote to ensure that any buildings constructed were only of a certain height and that advertising was banned from public spaces.

The combination of all of the above factors have turned Lanzarote into an ideal holiday destination for the environmentally conscientious. There are even several places to stay that run entirely on solar and wind energy, as these alternative sources of power have gained in popularity and effectiveness in recent years.

Eco holidays in Lanzarote are a true reality and are here to stay.

By Dave Talbot: Lanzarote is an ideal location for those looking for a more eco friendly travel destination closer to Europe and the UK. To investigate more about this stunning island visit Lanzarote1.com for information about Lanzarote villas and self catering Lanzarote accommodation.

Lanzarote – Winter Sun, Sand, Sea and Volcanoes!

Filed under: cruise — Tags: lanzarote, sand, sea, sun, volcanoes, winter — libertees @ 3:46 am January 7, 2010

Lanzarote, one of the Spanish Canary Islands, is very popular during the winter months and people flock from Europe seeking the winter sun.

Holidays in Lanzarote are usually met with warm, sunshine and tend to be very relaxing.  Lanzarote offers the ideal holiday if you want to get away from the hassles that everyday life presents.

The island, even though its only small, has so much to offer in terms of beaches, pubs, restaurants, the national park, aqua activities and safaris.

The beaches of Lanzarote are somewhat unique due to the volcanic history of the island.  The beaches range from golden white sand on the east of the island, to a black / charcoal sand on the west.

During the summer seasons the sea can be very warm and pleasant.  Even during winter it is possible to take a dip in the ocean, although it does tend to be a little cooler during the winter months.

If it’s the islands volcanic history you are interested in you should definitely visit The Timanfaya National Park. The national park is located on the west of the island and is home to a number of volcano’s, including the dormant Fire Mountain.  If you take a trip up to the visitors centre you will be able to witness just how warm the temperature is, just meters beneath your feet, with a live geyser demonstration and the volcanic grill at the side of the restaurant.  You can also take a coach trip around the volcanos as part of the entrance fee.

Also in The Timanfaya national park you can take a camel safari.  This will take you through part of the park on Camel back!  A real sight to be seen!

Lanzarote has so much to offer the holiday maker.  If you want to get out and see the sites then I recommend that you hire a car or book yourself on organised coach trips when you arrive.

Destination Lanzarote is ‘the’ web site for people looking for holidays in Lanzarote. With reviews on where to go, where to stay and what to see, including the Timanfaya National Park you should stop by our site before visiting the island.

Ten Things to do whilst on holiday in Lanzarote

Filed under: cruise — Tags: holiday, lanzarote, ten, things, whilst — libertees @ 12:54 am January 6, 2010

Lanzarote is a very popular island in the Canaries but just because it is small doesn’t mean there isn’t alot to do whilst you are there.

Here is our top 10 ten things to do whilst you are on holiday in Lanzarote.

 1. Relax and enjoy the sun

One of the reasons you are probably visiting Lanzarote is to get some good weather and return home with a nice tan. There are plenty of beaches in Lanzarote where you will be able to lie back and relax – but don’t forget the sun cream! It can get very hot in the summer.

 2. Visit the Timanfaya National Park

The Timanfaya National Park (declared in 1968) is THE most popular tourist attraction in Lanzarote. Located in the south west the fire mountain nearly caused complete devastation to Lanzarote by killing off everything on the Island during a 5 year eruption.

 3. Visit Jameos del Agua

Situated just across the road from The Green Caves, Jameos del Agua is located in the north of Lanzarote. The lava bubbles that form the attraction were caused by the eruption of Monte de la Corona around 3,000 years ago. Visit the blind albino crabs in one of their only natural habits above ground.

 4. Submarine Trips

You can take part in Submarine Trips departing from Puerto Calero, or for the cheaper option the Aqua Sub departs from Playa Blanca harbour by the ferry port.

 5. Water Sports

The island is buzzing with water sports, from diving, jet skis and wind-surfing there is plenty to keep the water junky occupied. Check out some of the waves up at La Santa!

 6. Markets

One for the ladies! The best (in our opinion) market in the Canaries is Teguise Market, held every Sunday morning until 2pm. Playa Blanca also has two markets a week on a Wednesday and Saturday.

 7. Wine tasting

Although you might find this surprising, Lanzarote has a big wine making industry. The vineyards invite visitors to see their manufacturing process and offer free samples! What are you waiting for?

 8. Visit Fuerteventura

Take the short journey across the sea to the island of Fuerteventura. Just half an hour away from Playa Blanca by Ferry, Fuerteventura offers a totally different experience to Lanzarote and is well worth the day trip. If you want to explore Fuerteventura further we recommend hiring a car once you get over there. If you hire a car in Lanzarote check with your hire company to see if you are insured to take it over to Fuerteventura.

 9. Bars and Restaurants

The holiday resorts in Lanzarote are not short of bars or restaurants. In Playa Blanca alone you will find Indian Cuisine, Chinese, Italian, Steak Houses and Mexican food.  The warm evenings in Lanzarote, especially in the summer, make sitting out at a bar very pleasant indeed!

 10. Quad Bike Safaris

Not for the faint hearted, the Quad Bike Safari lasts around 3 hours. You will see some of the most stunning parts of the Island on road but 80% off road.
