Do I Need To Buy Car Rental Insurance?

Do I Need To Buy Car Rental Insurance?

Renting a car is a convenient way to transport yourself from place to place while on a vacation or business trip. However, car rental comes with a variety of risks, the worst of which is the potential for having to pay for any damage the car incurs while you are renting it. No matter where you are traveling or how good of a driver you are, there is always the potential to get into a car accident. If your rental car is damaged during the rental period, there is a good chance that you will end up paying extremely high fines, both for the repair or replacement of the rental car, and the profits the company will lose while the vehicle is being repaired. Personal and business car insurance rarely covers damage done to rental cars. Before you rent a car, be sure to check whether or not your personal or business vehicle insurance will be adequate. If they aren’t you will want to check out the rental company’s insurance plans and waivers to be sure that they will protect you from paying massive fines on damaged cars.

Although most rental companies offer insurance packages for their cars, it is a wise idea to first check if your own vehicle insurance will cover rental cars. Why is this important? First of all, personal insurance plans that include rental cars are more likely to fully cover damage done to that car than any rental company insurance plan. Many rental companies use rather limited plans, which can leave you completely responsible for damaged or stolen cars. Additionally, you can save a lot of money if your personal insurance covers rental cars. Car rental insurance plans often cost over a day, which can add up quickly, even on a short trip. Finally, if you decide to extend your trip for whatever reason, you will not have to begin a new insurance plan with the rental company of choice if your personal insurance works for rentals. Most car rental companies will require you to fill out new insurance waivers if you change the length of your car rental period, which may create a bit of a hassle for you.

Even if your personal or business car insurance plan fails to cover rental cars, there is a chance that your credit card might ensure car rentals charged to that card. You may want to check with your credit card company to see whether or not car rentals are insured when purchased with the car. If they are, be sure to find out which types of cars qualify for insurance. Some credit cards will only provide coverage for small and midsize vehicles, as opposed to sport utility vehicles and luxury cars. In addition to finding out which types of cars are covered, check whether the credit card company provides primary or secondary insurance.

If your personal or business car insurance doesn’t cover rental cars, and if you can’t get the car insured through your credit card company, you should purchase an insurance plan with the car rental company you choose. This will save you from having to pay or replace a damaged rental and give you peace of mind during your trip.

Q&A: Is it ok to buy “Loss of use – car rental” for insurance policy without buying collision?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: Buying, collision, insurance, Loss, Policy, rental — libertees @ 2:18 pm September 2, 2010

Question by Curious: Is it ok to buy “Loss of use – car rental” for insurance policy without buying collision?
And if my car insurance policy has both: loss of use and collision, and if I was involved in an accident, is it ok for me to use car rental without claiming collision? Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by CD2007
You can purchase rental reimbursement coverage without having collision. If you are involved in an accident, you would be covered for the rental even if you wouldn’t be covered for the damages. If you have collision coverage and rental, you could only use the rental coverage if you were involved in a covered loss (an accident). In other words, if your car breaks down or if you just need a rental for the weekend, the rental coverage cannot be used.

Edit: In reference to the answer below, I work as a claims rep for an insurance company (one of the largest insurance companies in the US). Although it’s rare, I have handled claims for rental only because the insured did not have collision coverage. Rental reimbursement is purchased separately from collision or comp. Therefore as long as it’s a loss that would normally be covered, the rental coverage can be used.

Why Traveling Without Insurance May Cost You More

Why Traveling Without Insurance May Cost You More

You are going traveling. You have lots of expenses to cover. You need to pay for your air fare, your accommodation, your food, your travel while away, cultural experiences and the list goes on. You want to save money so you decide not to bother with travel insurance. You are going on the trip of a lifetime so nothing will go wrong. It’s an unnecessary expense so you don’t need it. Wrong. Very wrong. Traveling with out insurance can be the biggest mistake you make when organizing your trip and a very costly one.

What is travel insurance? Well there are two kinds of insurance to look at when traveling.

1. Travel insurance, (sometimes called trip insurance) which covers cancellations, delays, lost baggage and emergencies.

2. Travel medical insurance protects you against any medical expense while traveling.

Ideally, you need a combination of the two when traveling.

Imagine these scenarios:

You are in Darwin, Australia when a cyclone hits the area. The city is devastated by the cyclone and all services shut down. You have to be evacuated and sent home. Your travel insurance will cover you for this. You do have travel insurance don’t you?

Your luggage goes missing in India. You need to buy new clothes and fast. Can you afford it in your budget? Of course you can, you took out traveler’s insurance – didn’t you?

Or what if you go surfing in Hawaii and take a big wipeout? You are so severely injured you need surgery and major medical assistance, and then are airlifted home. But that’s okay – your travel medical insurance covers all that. You have got it, haven’t you?

Travel insurance is there to protect you in case bad things happen on your trip. It is a necessary expense. Overseas medical costs can be astronomical if you are not insured. And if you are injured in a developing country, medical attention may not be as good as at home. If you are insured you can get flown home and attended to at no cost.

Every year the government deals with thousands of cases of travelers being injured, falling ill or dying overseas. This is a distressing situation for all involved, but made even worse when the travelers are not insured, often leaving them with huge bills to pay. Hospitalization in other countries can cost over one thousand dollars a day. Medical evacuations can be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and if you die in Europe, it can cost over ten thousand dollars to bring your body back home. If you do not have travel insurance you have to cover these costs yourself (or your family will have to find the money).

Travel insurance is a cost you need to budget for. If you don’t take it out, your medical expenses could cost a whole lot more. Insure yourself and travel safe.

Great Gap Year Travel Insurance

Filed under: travel — Tags: great, insurance, travel, year — libertees @ 5:01 pm July 3, 2010

If you are in the midst of planning your gap year travel then remember to add travel insurance to your essentials list. There is no way of predicting what the future holds and travel insurance can give you peace of mind that you are protected against whatever comes your way.

You might experience cancelled flights or could lose your luggage and in either instance having a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place could help you out of the situation, saving you time, money and hassle.

Gap year travel insurance is widely available and can start from as little as around £39 for three months European cover. When it comes to organising your travel insurance, first of all think about the countries you are travelling to.

Insurance policies vary in the extent of their territorial cover and the related premiums, so you should check that all your planned destinations are included in your insurance policy. If you are only travelling within Asia, taking out an Asia-specific policy will be enough and the same applies to Europe.

If you haven’t planned that far ahead but know you will be visiting countries outside of Europe then worldwide cover would be a sensible option.

Gap year travel insurance can also be adapted to suit the amount of time you plan to be away for. From ninety days to twelve months, you can choose cover to fit in with your plans which is perfect if you are taking a long break before or after studying or simply feel like an extended holiday.

One of the benefits of gap year insurance is being rest assured that if you become ill during your trip then you will have access to medical care and treatment. The recent swine flu pandemic serves as a reminder that viruses can break out and spread quickly and all without warning.

When the swine flu virus first broke out the World Health Organisation (WHO) placed restrictions upon travel to Mexico where the virus seemingly started out.

There are now no recommended travel restrictions to Mexico or any other countries as these measures may not be effective in stopping the spread of the virus.

Individual countries are free to set their own travel policies so it makes sense to check out what’s happening around the world before you plan your trip and arrange your gap year travel insurance.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) hold a wealth of information specific to individual countries so this is a good place to start, either by checking their website or telephoning their helpline. The World Health Organisation also issue travel advice.

Before you travel it is advisable to research the level of medical care available in the region you are visiting, including access to anti-viral medications in the event you need treatment for an influenza-like illness. You should also speak to your doctor to discuss whether you should receive appropriate vaccines and other preventive measures for the destinations you intend to visit.

Your Cruise Vacation – Cruise Ship Embarkation Procedures for Cruise Travel

The Cruise vacation you have been planning for a year is now a reality. You’ve packed your bags with the appropriate clothes for cruise travel. You have filled out all of the cruise documentation, do this at home, don’t wait to get to your cruise ship, and now you are ready for this highly anticipated cruise. There are a few cruises tips about embarkation day that you should know before you head for your cruise vacation.

Keep all of your documents with you, that includes tickets for the cruise, any vouchers, passport and any immigration forms that the cruise line has sent you. That includes bus vouchers from the cruise line that will deliver you to the ship from the airport. In is wise to pack a change of clothes in your carry on in case your baggage gets delayed. If you have purchased the vouchers from the cruise line, a cruise line representative will meet you at baggage claim and take you to the bus or van that will transport you to your cruise ship.

If you decided to handle the transfer on your own, check ahead of time to find out how much a taxi will cost from the airport to the pier. It is good to know how long it will take to make the transfer so you have timed your flights accordingly. Make sure you have attached your cruise line tags with ship name, cruising date, and stateroom number. When you arrive at the pier a porter will relieve of your bags. He will expect to be tipped. The going fare is one dollar per bag.

Cruise tips are always helpful so pay attention to this one. Let the cruise line make your airline reservations. The reason for this is that if your flight is delayed the cruise line will handle it. If there are several other passengers on the same flight the cruise line will delay the departure of the ship. If it’s just you and your traveling companion they will probably put you up in a hotel in the town of your embarkation and get you on the ship at the next port of call. If you opted to do it on your own, you will have to make all those arrangements. So, for safety and peace of mind let the cruise lines do it.

If you have decided to go to the town of embarkation a few days before the cruise, that will not be a problem, so make your own reservations. Some travel insurance companies will pick up these expenses but make sure you read the fine print on the policy BEFORE your cruise vacation.

When you get to your cruise ship, embarkation could be a little chaotic. There will be lines, especially early in the check in process. There will be a lot of stressed out people so just relax and take it in stride. After you have gone through the check in process you will be aboard and your cruise vacations begins. Here is where it pays to have all of your documentation completely filled out. Many of the cruise lines have loyalty programs so if you are a repeat cruiser many times they have preferred check in areas. Many of the cruise lines will have preferred check in for cruisers who have booked suites or mini suites. Check this out with your cruise travel agent.

This is a little off topic but it’s one of the best cruise tips you will hear. Use a cruise travel agent for all of your cruise travel. It is important to deal with an agent that has sailed on many different cruise lines so they can give you an honest opinion on the difference between cruise lines. Check and see if they are CLIA certified cruise lines organization. Be careful they don’t push you onto cruise ships where they have preferred status which means they get a higher commission. Scour the internet for cruise reviews on cruise travel to back up what your travel agent is telling you.

Now back to the pier. While you are checking in you will have to give the cruise line a credit card for any on board charges. Most times your room card is also your credit card and identification for getting on and off at ports while on the cruise ship. If you can get on the ship early in the process you get two benefits. One you get to have lunch and two you get the first shot at spa and beauty appointments. It will also give you time to peruse your cruise ship and then head for the pool. Having been a savvy cruise traveler you knew to bag a bathing suit into your carry on luggage.

Just before you get to the gangway you will be stopped by the ships photographer and a picture will be taken to commemorate your cruise vacation. It will be on display in the ships photo gallery but you are under no obligation to purchase it. Check in procedures will be different from ship to ship even within the same cruise lines. It depends on the experience of the staff and the cooperation of the passengers. Remember that these folks that are checking you in have been working since seven o’clock in the morning off loading the people from last weeks cruise vacation. Then they turn around and start putting on a whole new set of passengers for the next cruise.

The most important advice is to try to keep a cool head. You are headed for the best thing you can imagine, a cruise vacation.

Happy Cruising!

Practical Rental Car Tips For You

If you have need for a car in a place where you are a new visitor, you may want to avail of a unit from a car rental service in the locality. These rental car tips might be useful for you as you move around to pursue your business in the area. .

You should perhaps determine first where you intend to go during your stay. If you are not going too far away from the center of the city or town, it might be a more practical idea to use the taxicab service available in the locality. That way you will avoid the responsibility for the vehicle you are thinking of renting, plus the added advantage that you have a built-in guide for your trips around town in the person of the cab driver.

Using these cabs could be the more convenient way to move around town. You just go about doing your business in town without much hassle, and pay the cab driver as soon as the appropriate service for you is finished.

However, if you have added plans to go some distance away then you might want to bring your own vehicle, assuming of course that you know your way around. In case you are not so sure of your destination, see to it that you have at least a map of the place you intend to visit. Many car rental services have this information kits as part of their service to potential customers who would be renting their vehicles. The map will be your main guide as you move around, augmented maybe by information you can get by asking the people in the vicinity for the appropriate information and directions that you will need.

Make an extra effort to check thoroughly the condition of the car you are renting, especially if your destinations are far from the center of town or city from which you intend to start your trips. Get the help of the car rental personnel to make things easier for you in this preparation. They will certainly extend this assistance as part of their service to you. This is just to ensure your smooth trip when you go out of town.

Before leaving for your destination, it will be helpful that you have the phone numbers of the car rental service in case you have to contact them for any problem that may arise during your stay. If you have a cell phone with you, be sure also to let the car rental firm know how to get in touch with you, if needed.

Try to get the phone numbers of police and other law enforcement authorities in the area in case you need to contact them for any kind of assistance. It will be also good to have the phone numbers of hospitals around. It will definitely be for your own good that detailed information like this is in your hands prior to leaving on your out of town trip.

Coverage Details Of Rental Car Companies Insurance

Filed under: travel — Tags: Coverage, Details, insurance, rental — libertees @ 4:59 pm May 25, 2010

Whenever an individual rents a car, they will be asked if they would like to add the company’s rental car insurance to the contract for renting the car. This rental car insurance is designed to protect the individual renting the car and the company renting out if anything should happen to the vehicle while it is in the renter’s possession.

Many individuals are unsure of whether the price of the insurance is worth the coverage offered and some believe that their current car insurance coverage or the coverage offered by many credit card companies is adequate to protect the individual from liability if anything happens to the car while in their possession. For some individuals, the insurance offered by the rental car company is their best option for coverage.

There are several different types of insurance coverage that are included in the rental car insurance offered by the rental car companies. The first type of coverage is the damage waiver, which may include a collision damage waiver, a loss damage waiver, and a physical damage waiver. Each of these waivers waives the right of the insurance company to collect additional money from the individual who has rented the car in the event that the car is damaged while in their possession. The collision damage waiver protects the renter in the event that the car is in an accident with another car. The loss damage waiver protects the individual in the case of the car or parts of the car being stolen while the car is in the renter’s possession. The physical damage wavier protects the individual from liability is the car is physically damaged from sources other than a collision, such as skidding off of the road and hitting a tree or hit by a blown truck tire.

Another type of insurance coverage offered by the company is personal liability coverage. This type of insurance coverage protects the individual in the event that they cause damage to another individual, vehicle, or piece of property while operating the vehicle rented from the car insurance company. Personal accident insurance coverage offered by the company will provide a one-time payment in the event that you or a passenger in your car is injured, maimed, or killed in a car accident involving the rental vehicle.

The final type of insurance coverage typically offered by the rental insurance company is personal property insurance. This will pay to replace any personal property that is lost or stolen from the rental vehicle while it is in the renter’s possession. Each of these types of insurance coverage has specific limitations, so it is best to read the conditions carefully when obtaining insurance from the rental car company.

Discount Car & Truck Rentals is the car rental company of choice. We offer car rentals in over 300 locations anywhere in Canada.
