RELIGIONS IN INDIA

Filed under: travel — Tags: india, religions — libertees @ 2:17 pm December 26, 2009

The country India is famous as the land of mysticism and values, was the origin of some religions, that continue living today in the world.

The mainly prevailing religion in India at the moment is Hinduism. Approximately 75% of Indians are Hindus. Hinduism is a multicolored religion with an infinite gallery of Gods and Goddesses. Hinduism is one of the very old religions in the world. It is thought to have been developed approximately 5000 years ago. After that in the early period other religions also came into existence in India.
Approximately 510 BC two more religions came into existence, namely, Buddhism and Jainism. These days only about 0.5% of Indians are Jains and about 0.7% people are Buddhist. In olden times Jainism and especially Buddhism were very famous in India. The people of India who accepted Buddhist viewpoint multiplied not only inside the Indian sub-continent but in addition it spread far and wide to kingdoms east and south of India.

The three oldest religions, Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, are seen as the base of the Indian philosophy. In contemporary period many fresh religions were also recognized in India.

One relatively latest religion in the country is Sikhism and it came into being in the 15th century. Approximately 2.5% people of India are Sikhs. There were different efforts to generate new religions in India but they did not invariably thrive. For instance, a Moghul emperor, Akbar, who ruled from 1556, made an attempt to develop a new religion, Din- E- Elahi, but it did not continue to exist for a very long time. There are other spiritual philosophies whose supporters see them as a separate religion, but they do not at all times get this respect. For instance Lingayat of south India see them as a diverse religion, while some others see them as a division of Hinduism. There are also some ancestral communities who insist upon to be accepted as a different religion from Hinduism.

Besides the religions that urbanized in India, there are supporters of  religions which never originated in India. The chief non-Indian religion is Islam. They are about 22% of the population of India. Christians are further then 2% of India’s population. There are also Zoroastrians. Though they are less then 0.01% of India’s population but they are known all over India. There are a few thousand Jews in India. Judaism and Christianity might have reached in India before it came in Europe.

Wildlife in India

Wildlife in India
Or country India is exceptional in the affluence and variety of its flora and natural world. India’s nationwide parks and wild life place of safety as well as bird sanctuaries from Ladakh in Himalayas to Southern most tip of Tamil Nadu, are stupendous  and the nation persist to allure the travelers with its prosperous bio-diversity and inheritance.  Animals and bird sanctuaries in India catch the attention of citizens from all around the world as the rarest of unusual species are to be seen here. With approximately 96 countrywide parks and nearly 500 wildlife protection places, the variety and assortment of India’s wildlife inheritance is beyond compare. Some of the significant sanctuaries in India are The Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve which is extremely famous is in Uttaranchal, Kanha National Park and Bandhavgarh National Park in the state of Madhya Pradesh, Ranthambhor National Park – Sawai Madhopur, Gir National Park – Sasangir are to be found in Gujarat etc. Sustaining a large selection of mammals and over 600 types of birds, India’s first national park, the Corbett was created in the foothills of Himalayas.

In the Indian barren region, the most talked about bird is the Great Indian bustard. In western Himalayas, one can observe birds like Himalayan monal pheasant, western tragopan, lammergiers, koklass, griffon vultures, white crested khalij pheasant, choughs, ravens etc. In the Andaman and Nicobar area, nearly 250 type and secondary species of birds are seen, such as exceptional Narcondum horn bill, Nicobar pigeon and megapode. Whereas the nationwide park and sanctuaries of northern and central India are superior and are recognized, there are relatively a small number of parks and sanctuaries in South India, too.

India has unparalleled diversity of plants and fauna that exhibits it widely apart from the rest of the world. Travelers coming for natural world tour in India, tend to take pleasure in any season, but to see migrating birds, tiger, leopard, barasingha and other uncommon species, winter is the most excellent period to stopover at sanctuaries particularly for that sightseer visiting for wildlife trip in India. Owing to water shortage in the summers , animals come out in groups to hunt for water, consequently the majority of the sanctuaries are closed throughout summer season. Vacationers can decide on for jungle expedition in an open jeep but the experience on elephants back is irresistible.
Wildlife Conservation Society India in connection with additional NGO associates and ancestral people, is making each potential attempt to expand new models of wildlife protection to protect India’s  majority of precious fauna and to guard the surroundings.

Passage to India Part 10 – My Father’s Flight to India in 1934

Filed under: travel — Tags: father, flight, india, my, part, passage — libertees @ 6:28 pm December 23, 2009

Copyright (c) 2009 Michael Ogden

My father continues the story:

The walls of the house were of mud plaster with the ceilings spanned by date palm poles laid flat and woven together by the fronds of the palms. No windows and no doors except the large entrance one which was bolted and barred at sunset and opened again at sunrise. There was no furniture of any kind in the guest rooms except some lovely Persian carpets on the mud floors, and everyone sat on the floor round a brazier put down in the middle of the room. An added bit of discomfort being the smoke from this brazier, which completely filled the room as there was no chimney or outlet of any kind.

Till one got used to this smoke it was almost unbearable, and at first both of us used to spend our time jumping up and going outside to clear our lungs and smarting eyes. Hardly had we been in the house an hour when the most awful storm sprang up. First rain, which did not matter so much, and then wind, and eventually a perfect hurricane. To make it worse we realised that since we had left the aeroplane the wind had changed completely round and would of a certainty blow her over.

My father thereupon started off to run the four miles back to her in this tornado, slipping out of the hut and past the sergeant who was really more or less keeping us under guard. One of the soldiers tried to run after him, but soon gave up the effort and they concentrated on keeping me more or less prisoner till Lady Blanches could bear it no longer, and insisted on starting off too as she could not believe that any aeroplane unpicketed and down wind as ours was could possibly survive against such a storm as this. Before she had managed to trudge three parts of the way back to our landing place, she met my father completely exhausted and wet to the skin, returning once more to the village and carrying some more of our belongings. He begged not to go any further as he felt sure she should hate to see the machine as she now was – soaked with rain and sunk to half way up the “spats” in the wet sand. He also said that when he had got to a quarter of a mile of her and could run no further, he had seen her lifted bodily off the ground by a gust of wind, the first thing to hit the ground again when she landed being her left wing which was buried in the sand to the extent of at least a foot. Incredible as it may seem no harm was done to her at all although we had to take off her “spats” before we could move her next day as they were completely closed upto the top with wet sand, and therefore prevented the wheels from revolving. As there was nothing we could do and the storm had passed over, we returned to our “hostel” and found food prepared for us and the soldiers, also for two or three hangers-on out of the village whom we subsequently discovered were relatives of the headsman, and nearly always turned up either at mid-day or evening time for a free meal. These twice daily meals never varied and were brought in on enormous brass trays and placed on the floor so that we could all sit round them and help ourselves. They consisted of a large plate of dates to commence with, and then even larger quantities of rice and meat and a pile of the flat Chipatties or bread. All this of course, to be eaten with the fingers only as there were no knives or forks, and before every meal a brass jug and basin was passed round to every guest so that they could wash their hands before eating. To be more correct, we should say their “hand”, in the singular, as it appeared not to be etiquette to eat with anything but the right hand.
