10 Things to Do in Hilton Head Island

Filed under: travel — Tags: head, hilton, island, things — libertees @ 3:21 pm December 22, 2009

Hilton Head Island in South Carolina is a town and an island of the same name. Its 12 miles of beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean have made it a popular area for visitors. Here are some ideas for things to do.

Learn at the Coastal Discovery Museum
This is more than a museum, as staff organise tours and cruises round the island, classes for schoolchildren, and summer camps. Learn about the area’s history and ecology from the outdoor and indoor exhibits, and take a souvenir home from the museum store.

Visit Harbour Town
In addition to the lighthouse, (see below), visitors to Harbour Town can browse the specialty shops and art galleries, and eat at excellent restaurants. Admire the boats in the pretty marina and book a dolphin watching tour or rent a craft for water sports.

Visit the Harbour Town Lighthouse
Climb the steps to the top of the 90-foot red and white striped tower for superb views of the island and shop for jewelry and collectibles at the shop. The Lighthouse Museum has artifacts and photographs about the history of the island.

Play at the Adventure Cove
Two 18-hole mini adventure golf courses with a Caribbean theme and a large games arcade make up this family fun center. The golf courses are imaginatively designed with lagoons and caverns.

Visit the Public Parks
Hilton Head Island has several parks with sports facilities and other amenities. Fish from the floating dock on the lake at Jarvis Creek Park, admire the huge oak trees at Fish Haul Creek Park, and explore the historic cemetery at Green Shell Park. Crossings Park contains the Bristol Sports Arena with a basketball court and a roller hockey rink.

Play at The Sandbox
Fun and education are the keys at this children’s interactive museum where young visitors learn through play in activities that include pretending to be a pilot, playing a musical instrument, and participating in art projects. They can also climb a wall, hunt for a T-Rex, learn about preparing food, and play with magic sand. The museum also organizes special family fun nights.

Taste the Wine at the Island Winery
The winery produces fine red and white wines, including Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Merlot. Carolina fruits, such as apples, cranberries, blueberries, blackberries, and peaches are also used to make wine. Visitors receive free wine tasting and there is a weekly wine and cheese happy hour.

Play at the Hilton Head Pirate’s Island Adventure Golf
Pirate themed miniature golf is inventively brought to life with landscaping and life sized figures. Treasure caves, waterfalls and ghost ships add to the swashbuckling atmosphere.

Listen to the Hilton Head Orchestra
The orchestra performs a wide range of music at their concerts from classical to tunes from popular Broadway shows. A new venue has been constructed that enables the orchestra to play a summer program, outdoors.

Ride at the Lawton Stables
This equestrian center is located at the Sea Pines Plantation resort. Individual and group lessons are available and it’s also a fun, family day out with horseback trails, pony rides, and carriage rides. Children will love the petting zoo, which includes a llama and a pot bellied pig.
