Dublin travel guide and tourist attractions guide through IRTouring some people hate it, others love it. For us, as for lots of others, Dublin was the beginning and the end of our 3 weeks holiday in Ireland; we arrived here with the ferry from Holyhead. Because we wanted to see so much of the rest of Ireland, we ended up with the almost impossible mission to explore this marvelous city in just one day.

The city is divided in two equal pieces by the river Liffey. The southern part is the medieval city. And the northern half has a special atmosphere, and a lot of shops.

There a so many buildings in Dublin with columns, you begin to wonder if it has been built by ancient Romans or Greeks. Of course, this isn’t true. The Dubliners just like columns, we think.

This building was once the House of Parliament, but since 1800 it houses the Bank of Ireland.

A lot of buildings in Dublin are quite nice, but the first floor is usually spoilt with enormous windows and advertisement. When you risk a sore neck and look above constantly, you’ll find out there are a lot of beautiful buildings here.

Just across the street from the Bank of Ireland is Trinity College, the old university buildings in the city. Here are more tourists than students for two reasons: 1: you just have to see the book of Kells and the Old Library, and 2: it’s the tourist season.

This is a combination that is not unusual in Ireland: an antique-shop where you can have some food. Or, is it a restaurant that wants to get rid of the old furniture .

Though there are not many splendid buildings in Dublin, there is one thing special: the colourful doors. Most doors are painted in bright colors and some have extra features: pillars, a circular window above the door, a big doorknob

Where would you head to first if you were going to visit Dublin? It’s a tricky question to answer because there is such a lot to choose from.

Let’s take a look at some of the highlights. What better place is there to start than the Guinness Storehouse? This impressive building was the home of the fermentation process but nowadays it houses a fantastic attraction which introduces you to the world of Guinness.

There are eight levels to explore all in all, and you can even try pulling a pint of this famous beer yourself. You can also learn all about the history of Guinness and find out more about Arthur Guinness – the man who started it all.

If you want to learn more about the history of Dublin you should make the National Museum of Ireland your next stop. This is spread between several buildings, but the archaeology section is in Kildare Street in Dublin. There are all kinds of exhibits on display here that will show you a different side of the city.

Of course you cannot visit Dublin without heading in the direction of the zoo for the day. This is a perennial favourite among both adults and children, and you can enjoy getting up close to big cats, small bats and everything in between. There are plenty of buses which serve the zoo from the city centre too, so you won’t have any problem getting there.

If you need some downtime after all that sightseeing make sure you head for Phoenix Park. This is out to the west of the main centre of Dublin, and in fact you will find Dublin Zoo on the far eastern side of the park.

Besides the zoo you can see an ancient burial chamber, a Victorian garden and even Aras an Uachtarain – which is more commonly known to visitors as the President’s House. As you can see you get much more than just a park to explore when you visit Phoenix Park.

Right in the heart of the city is one of the most impressive sights of all. This is Dublin Castle, and while it has changed beyond measure since it was first built it is still well worth seeing. The Irish government uses it now, but in its earliest years the site was intended to defend the city if and when needed.

As you can see there is plenty to do on a weekend in Dublin. There are enough Dublin hotels on offer to fit every kind of budget too. So you’ll have plenty of cash left over to pay for your admission to all the best attractions. You just have to decide where to head for first.

Since 1608 this top Northern Ireland distillery has been responsible for producing not only the Bushmills single blends that carry the distillery’s name, but also contributing whiskey to the marvelous Jameson brand. A trip to the distillery also provides the perfect excuse for an overnight stay at the nearby Antrim coast and a look at the Giant’s Causeway.

However, if you do take the tour at Old Bushmills make sure you volunteer for the taste test at the end; the highlight of the tour. In order to demonstrate the differences between Irish and Scotch whiskies, participants sample young scotches right through to aged, single Irish malts, detailing the transition from the peaty Scotch taste to the smooth triple-distilled Irish alternative. It is a superb condensed education for the palate and for real whiskey lovers – not to be missed!
