Red Light For Visitors on Amsterdam City Break

Filed under: travel — Tags: amsterdam, break, city, light, red, visitors — libertees @ 1:02 am January 3, 2012

The girls in Amsterdam’s Red Light District, possibly the world’s most famous city break attraction of its kind, are having an unusually hard time. Holiday clients are down and those that pay for their services are haggling over prices.

There are reports that some Red Light women have angered other working girls by accepting half the normal ?50 for basic services. The shortage of city break tourists means some brothel owners see a whole day pass without a single client.

The Amsterdam Redl Light girls posing in the neon-lit windows have to pay hefty rents and it’s getting tough to make money. One or two clients a day doesn’t even pay for window rent of ?150 a day.

Escort agency charges are normally higher than for the girls in the windows but the shortage of well-heeled businessmen means the normal ?175 an hour rate is also having to be discounted.

The cut-backs in business expenses are hitting the more expensive clubs as holiday visitors opt for cheaper options. Many in the Red Light sex industry fear a change in attitudes is also hitting home.

Amsterdam has a famously liberal attitude to sex and drugs. Yes, prostitution has only been legal since 2000 but the Amsterdam Red Light District has been a major tourist draw for many years. Similarly, the city’s coffee shops, where cannabis can be sold openly set Amsterdam apart as a city break destination.

But the Netherlands is seeing some major changes. Amsterdam’s city government wants to cut the number of ‘Amsterdam Red Light District windows amidst fears of organised criminal activity. The coffee shops are coming under pressure too.

The Amsterdam sex industry is worth at least $100m and even more if you count the tourists attracted by the Amsterdam Red Light District who come to look.

This economic success of the Red Light District brings its problems, with the city’s officials pointing to an increase in violence. They blame this on the illegal immigration. With around 140 brothels in Amsterdam there’s up to 10,000 prostitutes in the city, the vast majority are from Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.

Amsterdam’s Mayor Job Cohen is closing clubs and shops as well as buying about a third of Red Light District windows and turning them into studios for artists and designers. Officials have turned down the license renewals of about 30 Red Light brothels.

The mayor is also closing some of the city’s 70 marijuana cafes following the Government’s decision to ban the sale of magic mushrooms and the closure of all coffee shops situated near schools. He says, however, that he doesn’t want to get rid of the Red Light District but reduce it.

This could bring its own problems with many of Amsterdam Red Light girls forced on to the streets. It appears the industry is undergoing a massive change, just as Dutch society seems to be embracing a more conservative approach to many issues. It will be fascinating to see what happens to Amsterdam Red Light District in the longer term but there’s little doubt, credit crunch or otherwise, it will remain a city break tourist draw for years to come.

How To Do Useful Travel Research

A lot of people simply avoid thinking about other aspects than passports and plane tickets when going on an international vacation and such an approach is not correct. Any international vacation will require a lot of research in order to have a healthy and safe trip and you do not want to forget anything so that your trip will be perfect.

First off we would like to emphasize on the fact that you need to be informed when thinking about health. You could start with looking at the Center for Disease Control web site to see if there are any disease or outbreak problems you should be worried about. Any doctor in your area could help you in getting the right prescriptions and immunizations you might require. Always know what you need before actually talking to the doctor. The same thing goes for any possible social or civil problems in the country you are visiting. We do not want there to be any conflicts that could put you at risk so tourist guides and the Department of State are also places you need to put on your prior to the trip research list. Combine this with a good knowledge of the location’s customs when talking about dress codes and legal problems.

The next step would be talking to people about your trip. There is a big chance that you will find someone that was already there. You can obtain email addresses or telephone numbers and you can ask various questions about what you might want to know. Word of mouth travel advice is invaluable when talking about any trip and learning stuff from people that were already there once. This is because these people have already been there and they can tell you what is relaxing and what is not, what is thrilling and what is not and so on!

Think about what you need to know when linked with your personality and plan your trip according to what you like doing. If you are a thrill seeker look for attractions you would love and would get your adrenaline levels to skyrocket. If you are fond of shopping look for the best shopping hot spots and so on. It all depends on the individual or the group of people that is going on the vacation. Make sure that there is a bit of everything for everyone so that the trip will provide a good setting for every single person and this is how you should do useful travel research.

The Internet: Helping you Avoid the Loneliness of Travel

Most people would acknowledge that travelling is one of life’s most precious joys. While home is certainly where the heart is, being able to visit new places and see new sights is a crucial part of broadening your life experience and opening your eyes to unknown cultures. Thankfully, the last half of the twentieth century has seen technology advance to the stage where nearly everyone can travel with ease and in comfort.

Whether you’re simply taking a weekend away at a country cottage in New England, or planning to go on a long-haul trip to Thailand, your vacation is sure to excite you with wonders untold and joys anew. However, while taking a vacation can unlock some of the wonders of the world, travelling can also be a lonely experience – and not just if you’re travelling alone.

For instance, while many people long to get away from their everyday routine, you might be one of those people who find routines comforting. And if you have a fear of flying, travelling to your destination might turn out to be a heavily stressful experience rather than a peaceful break. What’s more, large hotel rooms can often seem impersonal and invite feelings of restlessness or homesickness in you.

However, if you’re looking for a way to prevent vacation anxiety, you might find your saviour in an unlikely place – the internet. The advent of many travel sites and social networking sites on the web in recent years has meant that more and more people can share their holiday experiences with each other. But travel blogs and holiday sites can do more than just offer you reviews of hotel resorts or ratings of local restaurants – they can offer you real, valuable advice on how best to overcome your fears and apprehensions when you’re on a holiday.

The solution to this can be simpler than you might think: many travellers rely on taking simple home comforts with them – for example, your favourite pair of slippers or your most comfortable pyjamas – no matter how badly they’re falling apart. It’s also a good idea to take some of your favourite hobbies or pastimes with you on holiday to beat any feelings of loneliness that might creep up on you; if you play an instrument, for instance, take it with you. String and woodwind instruments, like guitars, violins or flutes, are fairly convenient to transport – and unless you’re embarking on a backpacking tour of Europe and need to travel light – there’s no excuse not to take them along with you.

If you’re the sort of person who abhors soulless hotel rooms, then why not take some items from your home with you to help brighten up your room: simple things like family photographs or your bedside alarm clock can help make the atmosphere around you more familiar and welcoming, and can do wonders in curing any feeling of homesickness that might arise.

Since we now live in the internet age, many hotels let you share travel advice and tips online. Homewood Hotels, for example, provides a bulletin board, where past guests can share their experiences of their stay – from restaurants to places to visit or avoid – and pass on advice and tips to potential guests, helping them get the most out of their holiday. So, regardless of whether you’re spending Easter weekend in Houston or Hawaii, you’ll find the internet is your friend when it comes to beating travel anxiety.

Just when I thought we had hit bottom (travel deals, I mean), the rates are getting lower!  I have outlined the best deals I have seen through out the Caribbean, airfare sale and a special Tahiti deal that will blow your mind!

This is a MUST READ if you are thinking of taking the family on vacation between now and next Fall.

There are more kids stay free deals than ever seen before. I also notice the additional costs for upgrading to suites or having connecting rooms are being cut up to 60%!

Another change I notice is the increase in resort and cruise credits.
Cruise ships always made their real profit by what they sell on the ship such as alcohol, clothes, tours, etc. Now more than ever before, the cruise lines are offering up to $300 on board ship credit.

The trend for resorts to also offer credits is growing tremendously. Resort credit used to be something I saw in the low season or an infrequent special. Resort credit can go towards spa, tours, golf, drinks and food if it is not an all inclusive, or simply fun nick knacks.

When you see these credits in the deal, always check what it is for and make sure it is valid on the dates you are going. Once verifies, just think of it like someone handed you cash towards spending money on your vacation.

Here are a few very new amazing deals for families this Spring, Summer & Fall!  Some of these deals have not even been published yet, so take advantage of them and happy traveling!

Caribbean Family Vacations:
I had to check this one a few times because it looked to good to be true, but it is correct:

CheapCaribbean’s 48 hour sale, all inclusive three star resorts for $48 per person, per night. Yes, all inclusive – meals, taxes, drinks, activities, kids activities, etc…many of these resorts allow children under 12 free, so all you have to pay is the airfare!  I would compare the resorts on sale to a nice Holiday Inn, this resort is midway between deluxe and moderate. The deal is for travel from May – June 30, a perfect family trip before summer activites begin.

Check out all of the $48 deals for families! This sale ends 11:59pm Friday, April 3.

Apple Vacations’ Spring Savings Sale! If you do not see your gateway, they may still have it, using the booking engine on the top of the page. It is really cool as you can specify your needs when you begin (airport, amount of people, budget, amount of nights, etc) and that will reflect every deal you click on. This eliminates the irritating task of having to fill out your information over and over to shop around. The lead pricing is $459+: 60% off: All-Inclusives w/Air.

Apple Vacations charters their own planes, so the airfare is very reasonable. The add-ons for different gateways are reasonable as well.  $499 per adult for 3 nights all inclusive five-star resort including airfare, two kids under 12 stay and fly for $199 per child!  Not interested in the all inclusive, ok, there are resort deals for $599.99 including 7 night resort stay and airfare!

Future Vacations is running my favorite kind of deal – up to $300 in Spa and/or Golf Credit! Ahhh, I would have no problem using up that Spa Credit! The resort is Cancun Palace, a Four-Star beachfront, all inclusive. I stayed here years ago and it was ok, a bit run down and a little big for my taste. Now the resort has had a fuill make over, ready to impress.

The make over includes a redesigned pool, modern spa, five fine dining restaurants, six bars including two swim up bars and a Kid’s Club. All rooms have a double Jacuzzi, balcony, first class amenities and 24 hr room service. 24hr room service at an all inclusive is the coolest – you can feed the midnight munchy attack without having to worry about exhorbanent hotel bills!

BookIt.com, one of the best web sites I have found for extra amenities and all sorts of goodies is running a Dominic Republic All Inclusive Sale. All Inclusive start from $59 per person, per night with tons of kids free deals, room upgrades and more.

Airfare sale:

American Airlines has a major sale domestic right now with travel through August 14. Airfares are starting at $49 each way. What is extra special about this sale is tround trip is not required. So if you want to fly somewhere and go back rfom a different gateway, you dont have to deal with all of the extra charges. For a listing of all the gateways and prices, click here.

The top value of the week (drum roll…)

Tahiti – the trip of a life time, suddenly became more affordable. Air Tahiti Nui is also offering slashed rates and free air from Los Angeles for kids! Add-ons from other cities are reasonable.  The feature sale is $1698/per adult+: Air, Breakfast & 5nts Manava Suite Resort Tahiti- there are other options, more nights – this is the lead rate (best deal) and it is specifically designed for family vacations!

Happy traveling!

Spring Break 2010 – How to Save on Panama City Beach Condo Rentals

Filed under: cruise — Tags: beach, break, city, condo, panama, rentals, save, spring — libertees @ 1:44 am January 14, 2010

In less than 2 months, the hottest beaches and cities will be overrun with wild and crazy college co-eds looking for a great time. It is that time of year known simply as “Spring Break”! The 2010 spring break season will bring in a much needed vacation for most. There are a host of places that you can choose to go, South Padre Island, Cancun, Daytona or Panama City Beach!

Depending on the size of the group that you are travelling with, your specific needs and desires – staying in hotels may not be the most desirable option for you. If that sounds like your situation, you’ll want to consider a beach home rental. Because Panama City isn’t as popular as lets say, South Beach – the vacation home rental prices tend to be a little cheaper.

The benefits of renting a beach house are numerous. Much like a hotel, the condos or beach homes are fully furnished. But unlike hotels, they come with full kitchens and usually have multiple bathrooms. Now these amenities may sound somewhat simple or irrelevant, but unless you are lucky enough to stay at an all-inclusive resort, the cost of food, drinks and snacks will be enormous. The access to a kitchen means that all of your friends can chip in for groceries and kitchen supplies, saving you a ton of money. There are several ways to save money on your rental – I’ll share them with you now:

1. Book early: No matter where you are going, making your reservations early is always the best way to go. In this case, the earlier you book – the better choices you’ll have. Rental units tend to fill up fast, you don’t want to get stuck with the left-overs. Get better value for your money with an early booking.

2. Do you really need an ocean view?: A room with a view is bound to cost more money. This goes for hotels and beach condos as well. People will pay top dollar for what they consider “prime” real estate. If you’re short on cash, ask for a rental that’s not directly on the beach, but within walking distance.

3. Don’t be afraid to negotiate: There are many reasons for increased rates during the Spring Break holiday, with the top reason being the unruliness and property damage risk that is usually associated with drunk college kids. Reach out to the property manager or home owner and see if there isn’t something that you do to negotiate a lower price in exchange for a higher deposit amount (assuming that your deposit is fully refundable) or a discount on the deposit altogether.

You will need to remember that renting a vacation home is still a big responsibility. You want to have fun, but you still need to be mindful of how you treat another persons property. As always, stay safe – be aware and enjoy yourself!

Barcelona weekend city breaks are a magnificent method to obtain the most excellent that the very old city has to provide without even wanting to take a day’s break. All the year round there is moderate climate and welcoming atmosphere of Barcelona make sure that even the command of winter does not dry out the vivacious ambiance of this vibrant and lively Spanish city.
This particular city, Barcelona is an enthralling blend of old and new, where the reserves of the past get together with the marvels of the future. Weekend break near Kolkatta

Filed under: cruise — Tags: break, kolkatta, near, weekend — libertees @ 4:59 pm

There are some beautiful weekend breaks near Kolkatta but one very enticing hill station which mesmerixes the travelers from all around with every charm of North-Eastern Himalayan city is Kalimpong. Kalimpong’s captivating Himalayan sights, tranquil retreats, gorgeous shrines, magnificent churches and multicolored monasteries are just amazing. Long walking tracks, lovely trekking roads and bundle of fishing and angling prospects in the Teesta River, make it an idyllic place for nature and adventure admirers too. Though Kalimpong is not just about peaceful and tranquility – it has a vibrant life too. Involve yourself in some local marketing around the river, visit the fine-looking monasteries and immerse yourself in the attractive sights of the Kanchendzonga Range – this is a vacation you’ll never fail to remember.

Dr Graham’s Home: Currently a chief traveler attraction, this was an instituition constructed to impart quality education to the children of the tea-estates. It is at present also an orphanage and has a museum which is raised in the remembrance of the creator, Dr J.A. Graham and his partner Catharine. The establishment extends over a 500 acre land full with own dairy, poultry and their own confectionary house.
Gauripur House: It is a kind of supportive teaching organization which was on one occasion a preferred hang around of Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore.
Gompas: Kalimpong has a good figure of Gompas which also make appealing places for travelers to visit. The Tharpa Choeling Gompa, which is a part to the Yellow Hat (Gelukpa) division of Tibetan Buddhism is one of the most well-known. The gompas are renowned for their remarkable wall paintings as well as for the astounding views they offer.
Thongsha Gompa: An additional place of visitor interest in Kalimpong, is an older monastery, in all probability the oldest monastery in the area. It is of Bhutanese foundation and is supposed to have been built in 1630.
Flower Nurseries:  Beautiful Gardens and nurseries blooming flowers are also a chief pull in                     Kalimpong as the city is identified for its soaring flower produce. It alone produces more than 80% of India’s Gladioli and is a chief exporter of flowers to different parts of the country.
Durpin Dhara: This is a chief vacationer spot in Kalimpong. It is the uppermost point in the city and presents some impressive views of the plains that lie beneath and also of the voluble Teesta that flows by. A renowned monastery, the Zong Dog Palri Fo-Brang, is also positioned here.
