Bangkok Hotels: A Royal Treat

Perusing the hotel reviews

Having never travelled to the Far East before, I really wasn’t sure what I was supposed to expect in a country such as Thailand (the land of smiles) as it is otherwise known. Nor had I any idea about the country’s recent history, culture or about the language. I mean was there such a thing as Thai language? Apparently yes.  One thing was for sure though, that is; I’d have to stay in the Royal City of Angels (Bangkok) for a couple of nights for a business seminar to see some people about a business venture.  Scared? Not really, after all it is just another city. Hesitant? Yes, since I hadn’t had a chance to book a hotel suite in the center and time was running out. Of course, you’d think it’d be easily done but when you have no time to research and not enough sleep to concentrate, you tend to worry about which kind of hotel you will end up staying at.  After all, it’s not as if I need to stay in some royal palace. Meanwhile browsing the web, I did find one advice site and it went like this:

[Aside from the obvious categories of class and style without forgetting that ominous matter of affordability, choose a business hotel that is located in the heart of the commercial business area of Bangkok. Go for one that offers a range of suites from superior standard rooms to suite and royal deluxe rooms plus great reliable services. They must have access to all the city attractions, historical sites like the Royal Palace and convention centers.

Your hotel location should be in a convenient area at the heart of Bangkok’s business center, although slightly set back “away from the bustle” to allow for rest and retreat after a hard day’s meeting. Check that access to and from the international and domestic airports is simple and available. Less than 80 minutes to and from the airport. Access by car or by public transport is also recommended. Good access to all business points, without forgetting the tourist attractions. Business people need time-out for touring, separating business from pleasure.

Aside from hotel service and staff efficiency, service should also include the amenities in the vicinity of the hotel and the kind of service offered from the surrounding shops, restaurants etc. Poor service from surrounding amenities would almost certainly suggest a poorly infrastructured area and to be avoided at all costs.

Rooms and suites

The business hotel should cover an extensive range of suites that are spacious, luxurious, and perfectly kempt at all times. Standard types to suite types fit for aristocracy that includes all modernisms of high-tech communications, amenities, large-size beds, good views and everything any guest would need for a five star hotel suite stay.

Great advice to those of you starting out, but I’ve been on business trips before so I actually do know what kind of place I need for a business convention. It’s not like rocket science. Finally, I gave up surfing the net and simply asked a friend if he knew of anywhere. He came up with two words; Dusit Thani, a beautiful five star palace in the center of Bangkok. Perfect for tourism and business and amazing service.

It just goes to show, it’s what you know, it’s who you know.

Would you Dusit Thani? Don?t dream, book your suite at a Bangkok suites . Visit the Dusit Thani Hotel website for more info.

Bangkok, Bridge Over River Kwai and Tiger Temple Travel Advice

Filed under: travel — Tags: advice, bangkok, Bridge, Kwai, river, temple, tiger, travel — libertees @ 4:59 pm June 7, 2010

Bangkok is a buzzing city criss crossed with canals & rivers.  The sky line is one of high rises, shopping malls & international hotel chains but at the canal banks and side streets of the city the traditional side of Thai life is clearly visible.  The business hub of the city is easily navigated using the skyrail & underground but the more touristy areas around the Koh San road are less well supplied & Tuk Tuks are the main mode of transport.  Negotiate hard with your tuk tuk driver – a taxi will always be cheaper & has the advantage of air conditioning however be sure to agree that you’re charged according to the metre as opposed to agreeing a fixed price.  Taxis will only take you at an agreed price after 3pm as from this point on your in to rush hour and they are highly likely to spend hours with you stuck in traffic!

About 3 hours out of Bangkok towards the Burman (now Myanmar) border, in the province of the same name, is the town of Kanchanaburi where you can walk over the famous but tragic bridge of the River Kwai.  There are some interesting museums here where you can learn more about the history of this place of wartime tragedy & cinematic fame.  There are also many opportunities for elephant riding in the surrounding area.  A 20 min drive out of the town will take you to the Tiger Temple – a real highlight of any trip to this province.  This functioning buddhist temple is also home to about a dozen tigers of varying ages (& sizes!).  The temple first took on this unexpected side line in 1999 when a tiger cub was found in a near by village, it had lost its mother to poachers and needed round the clock care to survive.  The villagers took the orphaned cub to the temple where the monks agreed to offer it sanctuary.

Word spread in the surrounding area and over the years more and more orphaned cubs were bought to the temple – word also spread amongst the tourist population and in the present day a mutually beneficial relationship exists between the tourist dollar and the conservation of the tigers.  A few dollars gains you entry in the afternoons when the tigers are napping in their canyon, photos can be taken from afar for free and if cubs are around there are opportunities for photos here also.  For a few extra dollars you can have a picture taken with a fully grown tigers head in your lap – not an experience easily found any where else in the world! Don’t listen to chinese whispers that the tigers are drugged – they aren’t and are in fact very well looked after thanks to the dilligence of the monks and the many (often western) volunteers. Of course queing up with lots of other sightseers to get your picture taken with a tiger isn’t exactly the ‘genuine’ experience a backpacker is after however getting that close to fully grown tigers remains awe inspiring and your money is going to a good cause so if you can stomach the crowds get yourself down there.  If you want a more personal encounter then there are two other options open to you – firstly you can volunteer, you must remain at the temple for an agreed minimum stay (think it’s 1 month) and assist as required, meals and basic accomodation is covered.  Secondly if you’re lucky (this is not an every day offering) and if you can afford it (c. $50 when we visited) then you can spend the morning with the tigers – only 5 people maximum allowed for this so you will get the one on one experience.  A morning with the tigers involves arrival at 7am for breakfast with the monks where you will get to bottle feed & play with the tiger cubs (including being locked in a cage with them & some squeaky toys for an hour of play time!).  Next you will get to walk the ‘teenage’ tigers down to the canyon for their morning exercise – incredible to watch them pouncing on each other in the water (check out the photos in the photo section of this website).  Following exercise time you will walk the tigers back up to their cages and give them a quick bath – just like their domestic cousins they aren’t great fans of this so handle with care!

Girl Friendly Bangkok Hotels – Travel Advice from an Expert

Filed under: travel — Tags: advice, bangkok, Expert, friendly, Girl, hotels, travel — libertees @ 4:59 pm June 3, 2010

Bangkok has some of the best red light sex districts in Southeast Asia. The availability of sex is the biggest attraction, and that’s why scores of men all over the world flock to Bangkok every year. But what most first time visitors to Bangkok don’t know is that there are hotels that charge you extra money for taking a lady back to your room and there are hotels that don’t care who you bring back (as long as it’s only one guest).

Chances are if you’re reading this, then you’re looking to take a lady back to your room. If that’s so then you want to book a hotel that is girl friendly in Bangkok. Non-girl friendly hotels charge a 500 Baht joiner fee and sadly it makes a guest feel sort of shameful as the security guard is usually the one who stops a guest with lady in tow from entering the elevator. Then you’re led to the reception desk, which is also called the walk of shame where you’re presented with a 500 Baht joiner fee.

To avoid this 500 Baht joiner fee and the walk of shame, you should book a hotel that is considered girl friendly. A prime example of one such hotel is the Peninsula. This is one of the top rated hotels in the world, yet they don’t care if you bring a prostitute back to your hotel. It’s an expensive hotel however. Fortunately there are plenty of affordable ones.

Girl friendly hotels are not just a hotel where men bring ladies to for sex.  These hotels are just like any other ordinary hotel in Bangkok where business people, tourist, travelers and so on stay. They simply have a relaxed policy on guest inviting a lady back to their rooms.

Girl friendly hotels hotel rates range from budget to astronomical. Some classic examples of budget hotels are the Majestic Suites near Nana red light district and Bally’s Suites Silom in the red light district of Patpong. Most of these budget hotels even include free breakfast and have a pool for guests to unwind on a hot afternoon.

What most first time travelers to Bangkok’s want to know is which red light district they should stay next to. The answer is Nana red light district. Nana is a district in Bangkok filled with clubs, beer bars, pubs and most importantly where you will find the most freelance Thai prostitutes on the streets at night. The main focal point however is Nana Entertainment Plaza. It’s a small building, just 3 story tall filled with a manner of go go bars. In the middle is an open arcade with several well known open air bars.

So if you’re looking for a girl friendly hotel, find one in the Nana red light district. That’s where all the action is and that’s where you should be to experience Bangkok’s sex district up front. But make sure you book ahead of time as most of those hotels are very popular.

Visit Nana Guest Friendly Hotels for a complete list of no joiner fee hotels in Bangkok.

You should also check out Nana and Soi Cowboy Red Light District Guide for maps of these popular Bangkok attractions.

Majestic Suites Bangkok Hotel Review – Is This Guest Friendly Hotel Worth Staying?

Filed under: hotels — Tags: bangkok, friendly, guest, hotel, Majestic, Review, staying, Suites, worth — libertees @ 3:59 pm May 16, 2010

The Majestic Suites hotel in Bangkok is one of the most well known guest friendly hotels in the Nana district. It’s location makes it one of the best strategic hotels for visiting one of Bangkok’s infamous red light hot spots throughout Nana.

Quality:

It’s not the biggest hotel in the area so the rooms are quite small. There are 3 room types available; Studio, Superior and Deluxe. If you’re claustrophobic it may be a good idea to avoid a studio room. The superior and deluxe are just a bit bigger but not too much. Otherwise the rooms at the Majestic are quite comfortable and the property is well maintained for a hotel that’s been through some years.

Value:

Room rates start at 1295 Baht for a studio and usually includes a free breakfast. That in my opinion is an excellent rate considering you’re right in the heart of Bangkok. Single male travelers would particularly enjoy Majestic Suites because there is a popular adult male entertainment center called  Nana Entertainment Plaza, a popular 3 floor building jam full of go go bars. There are also many small bars and pubs near this hotel. And just a few blocks over are some really very international clubs. But the biggest bonus is you get access to a tiny pool and fitness center at their much more expensive sister property Majestic Grande, just a 5 minute walk away. There’s even free wireless Internet access throughout the hotel. Not bad at all for 1295 Baht a night.

Location:

Majestic Suites is located near the always busy intersection of Sukhumvit and Nana. Running right above Sukhumvit road is the BTS Sky Train and there is a station just a 5 minute walk from the entrance. There are many restaurants and bars to keep you full and drunk in the surrounding area and they are pack especially at night time. This hotel is in a red light district too so as a man you won’t be bored at all. Majestic Suites is also a guest friendly hotel, which means they wont charge you a fee for taking a companion back to your room.

Conclusion:

There are a lot of plus points for staying at the Majestic Suites. Especially if you’re a man looking to party every night. So it’s not an ideal place to stay if you want to take your wife and kids on a holiday in Bangkok. There are many prostitutes that hang around Sukhumvit so the Majestic is definitely not a family friendly hotel.

Woraburi Sukhumvit Hotel & Resort in Bangkok Hotel Review

Filed under: hotels — Tags: bangkok, hotel, resort, Review, Sukhumvit, Woraburi — libertees @ 4:05 pm April 22, 2010

The Woraburi Sukhumvit Hotel & Resort may not be the newest hotel in the red light district of Nana in Bangkok. But it’s girl friendly policy and close proximity to Nana Entertainment Plaza has made this hotel a popular standby for frequent travelers to Bangkok.

Quality:

The Woraburi Hotel is a 3 star hotel tucked away on Sukhumvit Soi 4. Which is just about right with my review and expectations. They do consider themselves a resort yet there really isn’t too much of a resort quality or amenities. I’m not saying that they are purposely misleading anyone becauseyou usually get more for what you pay for hotels in Bangkok compared to hotels elsewhere.

Value:

There are 5 room types to choose from at the Woraburi Sukhumvit.

Standard (20 sqm.) Superior (25 sqm.) Deluxe (30 sqm.) Grand Deluxe (36 sqm.) Woraburi Room (52 sqm.)

Standard rooms at time of writing cost 1100 THB including daily buffet breakfast. But as you can see 20 sqm. is a bit tight. The Woraburi room cost 2880 THB for a big space and in my opinion well worth it. The Woraburi is quite old and it seems the hotel exterior is better maintained then the rooms. However, you can expect clean rooms. The Woraburi Sukhumvit is also girl friendly so you don’t have to pay a 500 THB joiner fee for bringing an unregistered guest back to your room. This is a big money saver especially since most men do bring ladies back to their rooms after spending time in a go go bar. You do have to pay extra for Wi-Fi Internet access, but at least there’s a nice swimming pool.

Location:

Woraburi Sukhumvit is a 5 minute stroll to the red light district of Nana Entertainment Plaza. Another red light district called Soi Cowboy is only a 20 minute walk away too. It’s no surprise that Woraburi is one of the most popular girl friendly hotels in Bangkok. Plus it doesn’t hurt that the location is in the center of Bangkok with many bars, pubs and restaurants to eat and get drunk in. The BTS Sky Train is a 10 minute walk and can take you to other points of interest in Bangkok easily.

Conclusion:

If you want a nice budget hotel that offers comfort and convenience and in a central location then the Woraburi Sukhumvit is an excellent choice. Remember though, this hotel is near two popular red light districts. So even though resort is a part of the hotel’s name you may not want to take your wife and kids here.

Visit Bangkok Guest Friendly Hotels for a list of popular hotels that do not charge joiner fees in Bangkok.

Travel advice for Bangkok and Thailand

Filed under: travel — Tags: advice, bangkok, thailand, travel — libertees @ 10:11 pm April 3, 2010

A violent showdown between Thai soldiers and anti-government protesters in Bangkok has prompted governments around the world to issue travel warnings. The Foreign Office has advised against all but essential travel to Bangkok. British nationals should also review travel plans to other parts of Thailand. British nationals already in Bangkok and other cities affected by the violence are advised to stay indoors and to monitor the media and this travel insurance advice. A state of emergency has been in force in Bangkok and the surrounding provinces of Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Pathumthani, Nakhon Prathom and Ayudhaya since 12 April. Armoured vehicles are deployed in the capital and security forces are attempting to clear the streets. Several violent clashes have occurred between red-shirted supporters of ex-Prime Minister Thaksin and military and police units in central Bangkok and the seaside resort of Pattaya. During the early hours of 13 April, troops used tear gas and fired warning shots at one group of protestors who returned fire. There are reports of some 60-70 injuries. Some shops are closed and red-shirted protestors have blocked several road junctions with makeshift barricades and tanker trucks. This is making travel in some parts of Bangkok difficult. The Lao/Thai border crossing in Nong Chai is closed and there are reports of road blocks in Chiang Mai and Lampang in northern Thailand. Red-shirt leaders have threatened major protests in 50 cities throughout Thailand in the next few days.

The main Bangkok railway station is closed. However the international airport and the main access road to it remain open. Transit through Bangkok airport has so far been unaffected. Foreigners have not been targeted by the protestors and there are no reports of British citizens being caught up directly in the violence. However, the situation remains volatile and unpredictable with a high risk of further bloodshed. The political situation in Thailand remains uncertain. Throughout Thailand, British citizens should exercise great caution and avoid demonstrations or large gatherings of people which might turn violent.

Should you become caught up in what is neatly termed, civil commotion or civil unrest, you need to be aware that most travel insurance providers include this as a general exclusion in their policies. The impact of this is that you may not be as well insured as you think you are. If in doubt, do check with your travel insurance company before you travel and look at your policy wording. Generally, medical expenses and medical repatriation will be included but if you want to be covered for all eventualities then you will have to pay an increased premium for this. Thankfully the chances of being caught up in these types of incidents are still very slight, and even when they do strike, they tend to be away from the main tourist destinations. So if you do plan to visit Thailand, do check with your tour operator beforehand who may be able to offer alternative destinations away from the troubled areas. For the independent traveller, be wise and avoid those areas where a heightened tension exists.

Bangkok and Phuket Island as Football 7s Hubs

Filed under: cruise — Tags: bangkok, football, hubs, island, phuket — libertees @ 10:44 pm January 22, 2010

Football fields are present everywhere in Thailand making football the most popular sport in the country. Thai people generally start their training or friendly football games everyday in the late afternoon when it is much cooler. In addition to the famous International Football 7s held in Bangkok and Phuket, a few local tournaments are organized.

The Phuket tournament is the most in demand as the province is the ideal place for a sport vacation merging leisure and sport. Seven aside football can be played in a week-end, with the opportunity between games to enjoy a swim in the sea, and at night, parties in selected entertainment areas to take pleasure in the most lively night life of the kingdom.

Bangkok is also a good place to join in a tournament as there are several grass fields of outstanding quality. During the tournament, each participant will have not only a taste of this busy metropolis, but also enjoy the night in the many entertainment places. The absence of the beach make it the second most preferred football destination in South East Asia.

These two tournaments have no price money to be won but teams earn a trophy for each level and category: Masters Cup, Masters Plate, Masters Bowl, Open Cup, Open Plate and Open Bowl. Every of the 10 players in each team also earn a medallion they can proudly wear.

Teams are mainly composed of foreigners from many different countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Hong-Kong and Thailand in South East Asia, but also from Australia, France or the United Kingdom. South East Asian teams are formed of mostly expatriates with a couple of locals as there are no purely local teams participating to these international events.

Contrary to the local football tournaments held on the dirt football field in Patong, the International Phuket Football 7s is held on top quality grass pitches where players can enjoy playing football safely. The playing venue, is changed every year and in the event an injury occurs, an ambulance is in standby with a doctor and nurses from an International class hospital of the province.

Bangkok has lots of grass fields and also many Thai clubs and expat leagues. In addition to well-maintained grass pitches from private sport facilities, football can be played in the few International schools, which have top quality fields. The International Bangkok Football 7s is usually held either in the Pattana International school, or the Arrow International school depending on the availability of the venue.

Another International football 7s took place in Pattaya a few years ago but it seems that despite the seaside and the nightlife, the city only makes it to the third position. Pattaya is conveniently situated at 2 hours from Bangkok by car and is a location that should get more expression of interest by foreign teams.

As a conclusion, Phuket, Thailand’s famous traveler destination, is the football 7s favorite location in South East Asia with three tournaments taking place every year, before Bangkok, which is the second with one tournament.
