Enjoy shopping by the seaside with a trip to Brighton

From the moment you see the West Pier rising from the sea, and then the famous Brighton Pier just beyond it, adorned with fairground rides and candyfloss sellers, you know this town has a lot to offer. Dubbed the ‘City by the Sea’, as Brighton & Hove is indeed a city, this has been a popular draw for fun seekers and day-trippers for centuries.

If the beach, bars, clubs and mildly warmer climes aren’t for you though, there is always a wealth of things to do in Brighton, and not least is shopping. Though compact and easily traversable on foot, Brighton manages to pack a lot of retail opportunities in and provides the full range of shopping experiences, from the thrifty to the decadent. Spilt into several noteworthy shopping districts, the people watching afforded from a cafe in each are a joy in themselves, as the charming architecture and laid back attitude of Brighton can be addictive.

Brighton Marina, one Europe’s largest, is a great upmarket waterfront development. For those without a boat though, the marina hosts some fabulous shopping; from Calvin Klein to buying your own yacht, this is a surprisingly varied place to shop.

Stay dry if the weather turns by heading towards the Churchill Square Shopping Centre towards the seafront. This retail haven is a bustling, modern retreat with all the famous High Street classics catered for. Handy in itself as Brighton doesn’t feature a main shopping street as such, Churchill Square has all you would expect, plus the obligatory well-stocked food court.

No trip to Brighton can be complete without a visit to the famous North Laines. A truly unique shopping experience which is alive with retro chic and quirky, chaotic charm, North Laines are where the town’s bohemian congregate in amongst the weaving streets of the town’s compact cultural district. Though smaller than half a square mile, the North Laines have more than 300 independent shops, which is the largest selection on England’s south coast.

Not to be mixed up is the equally superb The Lanes. Set in the former heart of Brighton’s fishing quarter, these historic lanes offer a disorientating maze of alleyways and closes that twist together, unveiling a collection of jewellery and antique shops, as well as creative spaces like studios and contemporary design boutiques. Though buskers provide the entertainment during the day, by night The Lanes light up with live music, as various venues can be found dotted through this fascinating area. Not far from here, many hotels in Brighton can be found along the famous seafront promenade.

Head west from Brighton centre and you will soon notice the architecture change into splendid Regency townhouses, tree-lined mews and red-brick mansions as you arrive in the laid-back Hove. From independent fashion boutiques and champagne specialists to a weekly farmers’ market, organic whole food and mouth-watering delis; Hove is the hub of essential upmarket shopping and a joy to browse.
